i'm sorry, but Xperia U is not a worthy Ray successor: it's bigger and heavier, while having a smaller battery, poorer camera, no SD card support, same amount of ram ... etc

It is only 1x1x2,6 mm bigger which means that practically have the same volume and 10 gr heavier... The rest of the specs are about the same. If you don't want to buy a phone of the current Sony line up, you are not obligated to. You can wait for the new phones which will be announced in the future.

As long as they still plan on releasing the minis(somthing like xperia u but smaller) can wait until then. Or stick to 2011 range. Agree that Ray is nicer than Xperia U. Tapioca must be x8

Take it easy, Sony will show more after 2 quarter of this year it's to early to show a monster

I don't agree with your comment at all. 2 more quarters from now would mean Q4. By that time, all manufacturers, including Apple would have show cased and released their phone/s. (Assuming the Samsung Galaxy S III would be announced and released on March as rumored). It will probably take Sony another 2 months to release their phone/s after announcement. Meaning, earliest they will announce the phone/s would probably be October and the earliest release will be end of November or beginning of December. With that in mind, CES is right around the corner, then follow by MWC. To me, that just makes absolutely no sense. Sony should just announced and release what they have, if they have anything, as soon as possible, hopefully by the end of the 2nd Quarter.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM TO RELEASE ION FOR GLOBAL IN Q2??? TELL ME THAT PLEASE. ITS NEVER TO EARLY. LOOK TO THE COMPETITORS... SONY IS ALWAYS TOO LATE. EVEN IF THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL DEVICE LIKE THE ION.

You really need to relax, better CPU doesn't mean better performance and Sony don't care about specifications with quad core or something like that, it's all about the software performance.

My bad, didn't read properly. For some odd reason I interpreted what you said as 2 quarters from now. Anyway, let's hope that Sony doesn't do what I said or worse, not release anything anymore. That would really be some bad news.

Honestly, it would be real nice if Sony has a set announcement/release cycle. Like Apple with their yearly announcement/release and the Japanese Carriers with their Winter and Summer lineup. This would help out in many different occasion. Such as brand recognition, decisiveness of fans, and more that I can/can't think of.

There seems to be a lot of disappointment from the announcement but isn't this what we expected, a couple handsets to support the flagship Xperia S?

We (at least I) also expected this to be the back end of the left over SE stuff. For me the only surprise is that Sony would have wanted to put their name on these devices.

I'm not opposed to the designs being all pretty much the same. I think of it like a series of laptops but comes in different screen sizes and comparable specs (think of the Macbook Air 11" and 13" each having a choice of a couple different processor/SSD/RAM sets).

Perhaps Sony would have been better publicising that these are part of the same NXT series better and showing them all at the same time as parts of the same series.

There will be a point in the (fairly near) future when the mobile device market (phones and tabs) will be similar to the laptop market of today and the laptops market will shrink. You'd expect places like offices/libraries/cafes/planes/trains/living rooms to simply have a universal dock that links your personal mobile device to a screen and keyboard/mouse for you to work/surf/relax. When you think of a market like that it's not unreasonable to think of manufacturers like Sony to simply have series of handsets with the same design and just different sized screens and chipset configs.

I'm keen to know if there will be other series of handsets from Sony later in the year or next year or whether Sony will take yet another turn of direction.

On a more personal note the full metal jacket on the Xperia P is georgeous, I didn't like Xperia S as it smelt unfinished but the Xperia P has the design polished beautifully.

@Rog

Is Global Ion = Hayabusa ?
Will it use the same snapdragon S3 cpu ?

@topic

Guys, we were reading that there will be SONY devices by Q3 but what happened now ? There seem to be no such devices in the pipeline.
Guess we will need to wait till MWC 2013 for a proper Sony handset
Also unknown13x mentioned the "global ion" will only be sold in countries that have LTE. So that means it will be sold in select few countries like USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and a few in Europe. Which means Xperia S is the 2012 flagship for the global market ?????????

And he also denied that the Mint is a phone.

I really don't like the design of the nxt series. I will wait a bit more to replace my Elm.

So the best thing from yesterday was the release of the Xperia S

The P I have mixed feelings about, its good but some people may want more memory. I'm guessing if they have to they could release a 64GB S or a 32GB P if the market needs it. But to me the disappointment is really the U. 8GB with only 6GB usable is a little too low why not make it 4GB total and add a card slot.
