DM (and others mods), you should be enhance not only 8MP mode (compression settings). Im use, for example, a similar settings that you for fine 8MP, but i have enhanced all others modes too, this dont mean force all to the max, but tweak all a little, some more, some less. IF you want i send you my settings
I belive that also you can replace the original 320*280 video recorder mode for CIF at 25fps, with fps reduction you dont care about IQ, at the opposite you will gain IQ for videos and 25fps are more than sufficient, and you gain a little more lines of video too: CIF = 352*288. Im analyzing now some video samples and try enhanced a little more the quality and res.
Other possible enhanced its expand default +-2EV to +-4EV, its useful for some images, i will post some examples tomorrow with the sun light... i need the day.
