No P990 for the U.S. market?!?

Bad news after visiting the SE booth at CTIA 2006 last week (CTIA is the biggest mobile show in the U.S., covering all mobile technologies, not just GSM): the SE rep there shared his disappointment that the P990 is not coming to the U.S. market, as the major GSM companies have declined to purchase it (start sending cards and letters now!). Although one can purchase a European version of the phone (as many have done before), this will not provide optimal radio performance in the US markets and will lack 3G in the U.S.:
- lacks 850 MHz band widely used by Cingular
(and remember, lower frequencies are better,
delivering better indoor signal)
- lacks U.S. 3G bands
since U.S. does not use the same 2150 MHz 3G bands used in Europe

So, we're left with a choice of purchasing a European version that has improved UI and additional features, but no 3G and poorer radio performance. NOT FOR ME,s adly, as I had made up my mind that this was my next phone, and was holding out for it, as many of you are.

Hey hey people so much for it being available in UAE. My brother has just been over there and it will not be released in there or in any place for at least a month. So any site claiming to have it will be a scam. Sorry to disapoint.

Has the US even formally chosen which band they'll be doing 3g on?

@ .tibbsy. - thats comes as no surprise to me. Im sure if the phone was about ready for release, we'd also hear about it showing up elsewhere and not just in UAE.

Its a shame, even though im happy to wait for the phone if i do decide to buy it (im still unsure), because by the time the summer comes the N80 and Nokias E series will be upon us and the P990i might just get washed away by its competitors.

Lets just hope that providers worldwide will support the Blackberry PIN features of this device over the Nokia E61. Push email support via BES is a HUGE factor worth waiting for, and COMPLETE BES provisioning as if it was a BB 7290/8700 over the BES+wireless provider network is worth the wait.

I'd just wish SE had a black model with 850/1900mhz (either) for WCDMA support for the America's even if 850mhz for voice calls wasnt there.

I work in London and I have noticed that more people use the P9xx than any other Smartphone (the Jam is also popular). I know many current P9xx users that are waiting for the P990. So I would have thought SE could rely on their existing customer base for replacement sales which could be as high as 1m units.

US networks don't want the P990. So US customers will have to risk using imported P990s on US GSM networks. SE, unlike Nokia, don't seem to have much traction with US networks. We are so luck in Europe that we can use many SIM free devices on GSM/UMTS networks.

Hi, 1 thing for sure about BB Connect is that different manufacturers are implementing it differently. In my corporate, I had setup and supported BB Connect on 3 models of phones, namely P910i, NK9300 and NK9500. Of the 3, P910i has the best implementation, simply because it stays true to RIM's own BB Devices implementation, and all Outlook email folders are properly redirected into their own respective folders. E.g., if you have created 10 new folders within your mailbox (must be at the same level as Inbox, Sent, etc folders), your BB Connect on your P910i will also create these 10 folders inside the Blackberry mailbox on the P910i and properly redirect those incoming emails that may have certain rules set on Outlook to be redirected accordingly.

On the 9300/9500, no folders folders will be created and all incoming emails whether or not there are rules being set to be redirected, will be made available only in the inbox of the Blackberry mailbox. This causes lots of confusion the users.

Hence, I believe SE will continue to stay true with the Blackberry Connect software for their P990i and I suspect NK E series will be somewhat the same as 9300/9500. If anyone wishes to use Blackberry on their phones, then I would suggest to wait a little for the P990i before jumping over to the E series.
