the a200 is a budget phone & budget phones are for those with a low budget...duh!!!
...or people who know what they want, and what they want happens to be satisfied with a simpler phone.
There are so many reasons people buy a phone, from looks to size to price to functionality, to controls, to the way a particular thing was done or implemented. Budget comes in of course, but there are so many other factors at play, and I'd argue most are satisfied with lower-end phones and I'd also argue the overhwhelming majority of the market aren't enthusiasts that want the kitchen sink in their phones. Sure the enthusiast and smartphone market is important, but I think it gets way too much attention on how it impacts financial performance on enthusiast forums like this one.
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]nancialpressreleaseq2-20080718
" Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,820 million, a decrease of 9% compared to the second quarter of 2007 due to unfavourable exchange rate fluctuation, continued slowing market growth in mid- to high-end phones and increased competition. Gross margin also decreased compared with a year ago reflecting a less favourable product mix, with particular impact in Europe, and increased price competition in general. "
So, to summarize:
1) unfavourable exchange rate
2) continued slowing mid-to-high-end market growth
3) bad product mix
"Average selling price (ASP) for Sony Ericsson decreased both sequentially and year-on-year due to the impact of a greater proportion of lower priced phones in the product portfolio, as well as increased price competition in the market for mid- to high-end phones. Market share for the second quarter is estimated to be around 8%."
Summary:
Lower Average selling price 'cause of:
1) greater proportion of lower-priced phones in product portfolio
2) increased price competition
Down the bottom we see:
"Sony Ericsson forecasts that the global handset market for 2008 will grow at a rate of around 10% from more than 1.1 billion units in 2007, with continued decline in industry ASP. The majority of this growth is expected to be in emerging markets where lower priced phones dominate."
--------------
SE have apparently identified as the low-end as the big growth market in developing economies, and it seems like lately that's where a lot of their effort is going, if recent announcements are anything to go by. So I'm guessing more UNIQUE offerings in their lower-end. The 3.5mm jack and radio focus in one model is testament to some of this thinking, I think.
I think that's great.
Apologies if these facts have been repeated, I didn't read the whole thread. And given how some of SE's newly-released low-end is priced right now, I think they are either insane or mad financial geniuses

the k850i is a a200 based phone and last time i checked it wasnt a cheap phone. Not even all a100 phones r cheap. a1 and a2 are just systems versions they dont determine the price. T series are usually cheaper then the w and k series.

Well, judging solely on the result of the Best Debater Award one could conclude SE are dead and buried and Nokia is our new object of affection. If that's the case why are we all still here? It's like attending church after the existance of God has been proven false - pointless.
Call me whatever you will, I will always remain a believer.
