KiloBits is more than Kilobytes- the first post seems confused.
8 bits is one byte, so if I attain 8kilobits per second, a quick divide by eight gets the result of one kilobyte per second.
THat's why a 56kbit modem gets only around 7kbytes per second at an ultimate max.
Using o2 UK free gprs, on a p800 (i'm in a fairly remote location, but there's a transmitter just down the road), i get 19.31Kbits per second
I guess that there's not too much load on the transmitters GPRS right now.

Also.... the reason is that each transmitter, or cell, has a set amount of bandwidth that it can share amongst the GPRS users connected to it.
The MAXIMUM possible is 115kbps, so if you're the only one on the cell, and the cell is set to the highest possible speed (I guess the cells near large cities will be), then you'll get 115KiloBITS per second, which is around 15kilobytes per second.
However, if two people go for all the bandwidth, then the bandwidth available to them halves... giving 67.5Kbits per second each.
Considering cells cater for loads of phones at once, it can quickly slow down (especially with large picture messages being the main use of GPRS among the masses)
Hence, during saturday evening, when there's loads of people sending picture messages, or recieving them, it'll be schloooow, but come sunday during the night, it'll be well speedy

I got 17.51kbit on O2 UK, which is 2.18k/sec. Nothing incredible, but about half the speed of your average dialup connection, which considering it's going to a device that's moving and much smaller than a PC isn't bad at all.
It'd be interesting to try it over a GSM connection and see what the speed difference is like. I only get 1/5 bars in my room (where I ran the test) anyway so maybe with a better signal the speed would increase.
@batesie: It says you got 204.80kbit, which is 25.6k/sec and pretty damn impressive (maybe even impossible) for a GPRS connection.
Did you clear your cache before you ran the tests?
