Hey ... well to get to your query, yup the camera results are way better with the latest firmware. You can check it out here on this site as pics taken with the new K800i with final firmware :

As for the whole video issue, well since K800i was made with all that latest stuff involved in it. They left the video alone as in Dec. The K900i will be released the 2nd cyber-shot fone. It will have QVGA rec. at 30FPS. along with everything else which is in this K800i.
Next yr you will get Sony's 3rd cyber-shot fone which would be fitted with a 5 Mpx camera. As now the whole K series will be dubbed the cyber-shot line apart from the already released fone's prior to the K800i and after the K800i which are the basic models. As afterwards it's all cyber-shot fones.
The reason SE didn't give us a good video rec. in the K800i is that they're saving it up for the next fone in line as well to test there other stuff. As you have noticed all K series fone's are basically candybar fones with a nice sleek, elegant design so to speak.
As for instance image stabilizer, video stabilizer, xenon flash, then flash on during video rec. etc.. they gave you everything but didn't increase the pixel size of video rec. and left it as it was as later on that too would be taken care of.
As you have to keep in mind that some specs were altered with the K800i and downsized being the video rec, internal mem. as well the OS as it was to be a totally new one and not a Java OS. They did that as they didn't want nokia to get a bigger chunk of the pie so they downsized and released the fone earlier as if they went with there earlier plan the W850i was to be released first and then the K800i which would be in Sep, but they changed that.
Now SE has more time to bring about what they really intended after all these fones get released as after this month there ain't any other good fone that will be released by SE till Dec, and which would be announed at 3GSM Congress in Sep in Singapore. So sorrie dude, but no video rec as it will still stay the same.
Well once the fone is released on the 26th June hopefully it will take around 1-2 weeks to get to you. So like you should check with your SE distributor and find out when they would be getting it. Not from the retailers but from the actual SE distributor in Australia as you would have a pretty good idea as to when it would be released.

And will the k900i or the 5mp kxxx next year have optical zoom, and 5mp kxxx have vga video maybe... hmmm.
Well, i might just get my w900 or n80....and maybe k900 later

Was this planned for k800, why did they not go ahead with it?

Well the K800i/K790a are tests to see how it does in the market. If does good you will have more and more and if it doesn't ... then oh well back to drawing board as they say but we all know that this will be another best seller in terms of price and what you get.
As for the optical zoom, well I am not sure about it, maybe SE will release it but you have to wait and see for that.
The K900i won't be for everybody, in terms of price and that there is only a small segment that really cares about video rec. as they are more concerned about taking pics and putting stuff into there fone then taking video's and according to Miles Flint SE president that they want to specialize there fone's now where one feat. will out way the other. As well the design of the K900i will be totally different as it will weigh more and look absurd as did the W900i which was a briefcase of a mobile fone.
As well next yr you will have the handycam fones which sole purpose is to take video's. As well if by end of this yr or next all new walkman fones will be compatible with the PSP portable for gaming and other stuff.
As well there is still one series which hasn't been announced and has been slated for this yr, perhaps in sep we will hear about it. As you have to keep in mind that SE releases all there mid-high end and high end fones in the 4th quater always and some in the 3rd.
As well releasing the K800i now with the added drawback was so that nokia doesn't get a big market share as you have to keep in mind this SE's first 3.2Mpx camera fone where as nokia has already released there 1st one the N80 and have another in the pipeline the N93 and as well who knows how many more so Nokia has already started gaining and SE still has to release there 1st fone so they couldn't wait and brought it further ahead. As there is always rivalry between manufacturer's and you don't want the other to win ... !!!!

So Video will be covered by a higher-end candybar later on in the year.
Will it be a W900i in candybar form-factor.
Will there be any differences between this K900i and this Handycam handset you mentioned?
