There is a SMS notification on the lock screen...
TEXT and the sender's name on an o2 locked iPhone on 2.2
Email is notified when the screen is unlocked...

That's a small criticism I'd have of it, actually - on the lock screen you get a notification of an SMS or a missed call, but no indication at all of email.
Since you might have hundreds of emails it makes sense not to flash individual messages up on the screen, but a little envelope icon on the top bar wouldn't go amiss.

Guys, when we receive a new email should this be shown on the Lock Screen?
Right now, if I get a new SMS I get a notification on the Lock Screen. But if I get a new email there's no notification. I can only see new emails notifications when I unlock the screen.
Jailbreak and install Intelliscreen. You wont look back. Seriously. I made the plunge and actually PAID for this app yesterday (first decent app i've bought aside from a couple of 59p app store apps) as i feel it takes a lot for me to be impressed with an app, and this is a killer app no doubt about it.
@Boinng, As you say battery life all depends on usage. With mine being jailbroken there's a lot more drain on the battery than normal...especially if i forget to turn things off like SSH after i've been using it! Major battery cainer. However, today my battery seems to be lasting ok but i've not really been using it... I would say only 10% has been drained.
I've read other peoples comments elsewhere that they think there is a slight improvement over battery life, and in other places people say it's got worse. I dunno, it's all too dependant on the environment in which it's been used.

Again, something the jailbreak offers that Apple deem not necessary to put in their standardised firmware

a jailbreak will never cock up your phone... it will not brick it, and it's always reversible. The only thing that can potentially damage your phone is unlocking it - which obviously isn't an issue with the 3g.
