I would say its the absolute minimum we should be expecting from a flagship phone, it should have been doing this from day one!

I think some people are really mixing certain things up...
The phone's RAM is divided into two parts : program memory and storage memory.
In the latter, you can install applications and the installed apps use the first for running. Deinstalling a few apps and deleting some original content has absolutely no business to do with the amount of free program memory available. That ~15 MB barrier had been set by SE or by Symbian itself.
What I don't understand is that why can't the phone simply have 32 MB for programs and 32 MB for storage...those damn Memory Sticks do exist for expansion, don't they ?!

Agree !! i don;'t think we need too much free in phone. In this case almost all people buying P990 at least buy 1 GB memory stick. I really don't recomend people to buy this phone right now..... if they insist to buy one, better not to buy singapore ver. ... very unstable and memory is lower comparing to generic world..

SE chose to use the cheapo NAND Chips that does not support XIP (Execute in place), as compared to previous P series that uses the more expensive NOR chips. The problem with NAND chips is that everytime the phone is booted up, the entire Symbian OS, plus UIQ and everything else has to be loaded into the RAM memory. This explains why it took such a long time for the phone to boot up even as compared to the good old P910i. The fact that a generic P990i has about 15MB left at boot time, shows that the OS, UIQ 3 and all system files took up a whopping 49MB at EVERY boot time, leaving all other applications with a pethatic 15MB to make use of.
So imagine this, a user who uses PUSH mail such as Blackberry, plus he/she may also need other language fonts, such as Chinese, Korean or Japanese. These 2 alone has to be loaded at every boot time by the OS automatically, hence leaving the P990i with about 10MB - 11MB everytime the phone is started up. With Blackberry, obviously, Messaging has to be loaded too, hence another 3MB gone (yes, Messaging took up a whopping 3MB+), leaving the P990i with about 7MB - 8MB. This is all that is left for someone who uses PUSH email and Asian language fonts ONLY and nothing else! Try starting up Contacts and Calendar and that's about it, about 5MB of RAM memory left. Try starting Opera and more often than not, Opera will either prompt not enough memory, or kill itself off while trying to load up. Try reading ebooks or play some videos or listening to music over BT too...
Also to note, the memory leakage issue on current P990i's firmware ain't helping either. With the above set up, it took less than 6 hours from a fresh restart for the phone to be left with 5MB RAM memory. Using SM Pro and of course R3B01 firmware, there is still no way of releasing more than 5MB of RAM memory, even if I killed off everything. The only way is to reboot the phone if I needed to read some ebooks, open up QuickOffice documents, or even to surf the web.
Is this what SE called a flagship BUISNESS SMARTPHONE? In order to use 1 "memory intensive" function, the user has to reboot the phone? Is it worth the US$800 for such a phone today (as at 26 Nov 2006).
Let's just hope that the rumoured week 48 firmware will help out somewhat, and incidentally, week 48 starts off TODAY

Here in Oman week 48 started yesterday but I didn't bother checking SEUS as I know that in Sweden week 48 starts on Monday.

just for the record I often have 16.2MB of RAM when I re-start my P990. But I can appreciate that Push email plus Asian language fonts does seem to make the P990 nearly unusable from you explanation. I don't think the Wk48 FW upgrade will help Asian users much, as you'd need about an additional 5MB of RAM to make the P990 even comparable to users like myself who don't use Push email and use an English device. So based on your analysis I think the only real option for UIQ3 users is the M600 plus low cost digital camera.

Is there a lot of hardware difference between M600 and P990? Does it have more memory? If not, shouldn't the firmware for the two devices be similar?

Even the most cheapest PDA phones don't have this "feature" !
Sure, SE wanted the P990i cost-effective, but to sacrifice usability ?
Damn it, they put the cheap kind of memory chips into the P990i and then put a sky-high price tag on the phone !
If that memory problem really can't be addressed by fw update, then I strongly encourage every dissatisfied P990i owner that we file a global petition and/or lawsuit against SE, demanding that they either replace the phone with an equally priced other model or give the money back to us till the last cent. Remember the Applo iPod nano 1st gen case ? That global lawsuit from the iPod customers really worked. I really don't think it's funny to pay $800 for such a buggy phone...and then not be able to use it as advertised !
What are these multinational firms thinking ? They better stop seeing the customers for being idiots, right now !

I mean, according to TM, Messaging occupies 187 KBytes of RAM.
But when I shut the Messaging app down, the phone has about +2 MBs free.
SE has really screwed up with that phone
