Hey Jools,

Long time mate.

Just heard that Vodafone will announce that the iPhone will be coming to a pocket near you. It will have 3G. There is no way that Europeans will buy it without it and Apple has a better habit of listening to their customers than either SE (never listens) or Nokia (they listen but are slower to respond).

Regardsless, I will probably get one.

We haven’t tested it yet, but the New York Times’s David Pogue posted a slideshow of his photos that suggests it’s about what you’d expect from a cell phone camera: not bad in still, well-lit situations, but not so hot when things get dark or blurry.

I have seen the video for finger tricks. I must say it look quite impressive. But unfortunately the designer just concentrate on the slickness and they totally forgot about established. They came out with a totally new and unfamiliar UI which does not follow established convention at all (e.g. options/command in a menu). This means steep learning curve for new users.

- Just a mere deleting of a message requires a relearn. I think it is a laughing stock that Apple even see fit to have a video to teach you to do this very trivial task.
- Many tap positions are located at the top of the screen which requires big finger movement and making single-handed use virtually impossible and not to mention that you can get RSI with prolong use.
- There are no consistency in different screens and tap positions are placed all over the screens. This leads to confusion.

A few more details, that have not been mentioned in this thread so far:

Sensors

The iPhone has three cool sensors. First, it has an accelerometer that detects when you’ve rotated the iPhone into landscape orientation. In programs like Photos, Safari, and iPod, it triggers the screen image to rotate as well.

Camouflaged behind the black glass where you can’t see them except with a bright flashlight are two more sensors: a proximity sensor that shuts off the screen illumination and touch sensitivity when the phone is against your head (it works only in the Phone application), and an ambient-light sensor that brightens the display when you’re in sunlight and dims it in darker places.

(Do any other phones have these? I don't know...)

Earbud Cord Switch

Without close inspection, you’d have a hard time telling the iPhone’s white stereo earbuds apart from a regular iPod’s—but don’t get them mixed up. The iPhone’s earbuds have a tiny, embedded clicker/microphone partway down the right earbud cord.

That’s right, “clicker/microphone.” The tiny bulge is the microphone for phone calls. But if you pinch the bulge, you’ll find that it clicks.

> Pinch once to answer an incoming phone call. Pinch twice to dump the call to voicemail. (You can also tap or double-tap the Sleep/Wake switch on top of the iPhone for the same functions.)
> During music or video playback, pinch once to pause the music; pinch again to resume playback.
> During music playback, double-pinch to skip to the next song.

I'm begining to like the iPhone, I can't wait to see the specs it gets when it's launched in the UK and I know it'll be cheap too cause of the network subsidies. If only it could run satnav with a bluetooth GPS unit.
I wasn't interested at all untill reading the news about how SE are gonna ditch software support for my phone. I can't see apple ever doing that plus I bet it works perfectly straight out the box.
