The K850 should have been UIQ3, both for the good of that handset and development of UIQ as a whole - it needs to be in more handsets to get more support, and it also needs to be the focus of SE's development, because make no mistake - smartphone OS's like that are the future of all phones. Nokia know this, which is why S60 is all over their range, not locked away in a couple of high-end devices.
The danger is that it's all too late for UIQ now - with the touchscreen version of S60 right around the corner.

I agree...they do need to do something...right now i donīt see the point of keeping launch the k series flaghsip without UIQ, and not only the flagship...if UIQ without TS is a reallity, they really should push on it for K series, and some W series
Nokia TS device will come in the end of 2008...lets see what come ahead from SE untill then...what i think should happen is:
Generalization of non-ts UIQ in k and w series
New UIQ for high end touch screen devices
Regarding touch screen devices, specially P series and high end W series, i am sure great things come ahead. I am not so sure about the non-ts devices...they have been rumored to come out over and over, and so far, nothing

UIQ needs to be vastly improved and revised to be usable in a mainstream phone. UIQ 3 has really done a lot of harm for SE (and Motorola with the Z8) as it's just not intuitive enough, or fast enough.
Obviously some of the problems are down to hardware too, but I really don't think the P1i, M660, W950, W960 or the awful P990 are going to remembered as anything other than a disappointment that set back UIQ quite a long way - and certainly allowed Series 60 to walk all over it.

There may be some truth in that, but that's all the more reason for SE to be concentrating their efforts in developing and improving UIQ, rather than toying with their other non-smart platforms. The P990 was a long time ago, those lessons should have been learnt and built on by now, but it seems UIQ development is still just trickling along as a dissapointing side-project, for niche devices only.

Ugh, most of the cell-phone using population doesn't even care whether they can install anything except games. So they don't care whether a phone has a Java OS or a smartphone one.
Personally, I prefer Java. Much simpler than those mind-boggling Symbian OS'es (also, the Nokia interface is just plain ulgy).
I do not know a single person (from those who I've met in person, of course) that installs anything, except maybe games. People (a majority of the customers) look for user-friendliness and looks and nothing else.

Although no one can deny the problems of early P990/W950/M600, i really fail to see how on earth the P1 is a disappointment??? UIQ3 is on its first iteration still. There are very few UIQ3 devices on market, so evolution has necessarily been slower than on s60 v3. However, UIQ3 on the P1, and even on the P990 with newer firmware, is a stable OS.
Of course they need to improve it...thatīs what nokia is also doing to S60 v3 - and demand paging is a great example of that...
If you tell me SE, and Moto, and UIQ, are not doing all that they should to really make UIQ competition to s60, i agre...they should do much more, and learn with Nokia/s60
But UIQ3 ITS NOT so bad like you, that is a personal your view...the P1, as far has i can tell, is being a real success to SE, and all the people i see buying it are really satisfied
