A quick Comparison, dug out an old Digital Camera I got with a PC years back - its a Gateway DC-T50 (which at the time, received some rave reviews, and beat out competition from Nikon to be the 'Best Buy' camera!).
Compared the newer SO905iCS camera to the DC-T50, and as expected the 905i comes very close - you decide...
However, note also the crops at the end - seems the 'Exmor' sensor does what it is meant to - reduce noise in low light - nice one Sony Ericsson!

The Crops:

Admittedly, at full size, the DC-T50 is sharper, but delivers noticeably more noise!

Gatewayn have a CCD sensor, (1/1.8 inch 5.25 million pixels), so its quite hard for a tiny cell phone sensor/camera to produce that colors/sharpness....
nice compare though
question ??
why dosent

, Nokia, etc just take a really good digi cam module (just the sensor & mechanic. no optical zoom needs) and then put it inside a "small" cell phone...
(sure it going to cost more, but im ready to pay little extra for a really awesome camera module)
example the 2.5 inch sensor from a Sony DSC-G1 !!!

@plankgatan
Sure, I agree - it would be nice to see somewhat sharper pictures from a 'Cyber-shot' phone - and yes, the Gateway has a superior sized Sensor, but delivers more Noise, whereas the 905i Exmor sensor delivers less noise than that of the Gateway...

I always love noise when it makes pics more detailed. That's why I always prefer a grainy type cameras.

It because Gateway does not apply excessive noise reduction processing, whereas SO905iCS did

but anyway the two pics are very comparable to each other (colors and saturation wise)
What i only hate about SO905iCS was the relative issue with it's european brothers(K850,K800,K810) when it comes to post processing. Images looked too smudged as the NR kicks details too much. although with proper post processing like the one applied in samsung U900 soul(albeit it's much smaller sensor) better picture sharpness, details and colours will be seen

Some more photographs from the increasingly powerful SO905iCS!
Somewhat impressive for indoor pictures with standard Supermarket indoor yellowish lighting...
