Looking at where
is at the current state of play, would maintaining the current status quo be good for Sony Ericsson? Or is Sony Ericson under 'Sony' not breathing new life into the venture?
There are plenty of good reasons for a Sony takeover, such as the ones mentioned above, and the most obvious one is bringing phones to market quicker and keeping up with the competition, which is simply not happening right now. The smartphone market moves so quickly that launching phones which are months behind the competition are almost not worth launching at all if they are regain the mindshare and marketshare from Apple and Samsung etc
Bringing the business in-house will help change this. Whatever happens, things need to change: the SE mobile business needs a good injection of technological know how and it needs to become more nimble. Sony is looking the way forward right now. T

If I buy a new xperia phone today and then after a month sony and ericsson officially break up, will sony support my phone or will it be the same with what happened to uiq users when it died?

They will support the SE phones, think of this like when the joint-venture was formed. The Ericsson t68i (which later became SE) was still supported.

That then implies that there will be no buy out?
If he talks about just working closer with SE, yay!

It does appear like he is saying there won't be any buyout. The problem is he is not tackling the question or rumour directly and that worries me. He could be talking about the now, the period in-between the negotiations and the actual sale, which means they'll work even closer with SE until the buyout.
There really is nothing in that story that makes me think the status quo will remain over at SE into the future.

Sony do they still make losses on their main branch, the electronics manufacturing, Sony is involved in banking and other investment companies that makes profit but their main branch is/was electronics.
SonyEricsson are soon among the "nose bleeds" passed by ZTE and Huawei among others.
A lot of SE misfortune can be blamed on the boards of SE Sony and Ericsson, for instance the stupid decision to only allow Sony Memory stick cards in SE phones, for many years.
A decision made not from the customers demand or market researches, just a plain decision from the board, to boost sale and market-share for the Sony Memory Stick format.
Thats just one example of bad management of SonyEricsson
Also check what happened with the camera technology Sony bought from Minolta(RIP), The deal gave Sony a foothold in the DSLR camera market. Still Nikon and Canon have nothing to fear from the competition from Sony.
For me, I haven't and won't buy anything Sony, have no Sony products at all at home, exept for three phones SE Hazel, Second hand SE K850 and a SE G900 (The G900 was paid by a pastry from a vending machine at work
)

While Hirai didn't confirm the joint venture will be bought out, the number of rumours around the issue, plus Sony's in-house tablet range, mean it seems ever more likely we'll see Sony striking out as a solo mobile phone brand in the future.
