I was just reading an article on Samsung clamshells and how they tend to be very similar to one another, with very little difference between them. Samsung seem to be walking down Nokia's path.

SE on the other hand appear to be following a different road; selective models packed with features and built to a high standard.

do you thing se are taking this road out of chose ie this is there business plan. or out of nesecity ie they aint got the infrastructure and finiance to adopt what all the other major cell makers do
i aint got a clue myself just curious based on what you had typed

I think that it is probably a mixture of both; SE are not a huge company and they do not enjoy the same sort of market share, which Nokia, Samsung and Motorola do, but at the same time I would also imagine that they would want to differentiate hemselves from the crowd.

SE mobiles are usually to a high standard, certainly when it comes to features. SE seem to be aiming at providing high quality products rather than aiming to flood the market with 'something for everyone'.

@scotsboyuk:

imo, by having a few good, heavily-featured and well made models strategy would be good if it works (like in the motor/car industry). se can always count on its fan and also the "tech-savvy" to buy its phone.

like i say, i'm not too sure whether this applies to phone business model. the profit margin of P900 is not that much different compared to 6600 and we r talking a couple hundreds of dollar here, unlike the tens of thousand in car industry.

so the volume game matters a lot here. and the best way to get volume is to hv many models. it really doesnt matter if it just repackage as long as it target a different group of customers.

edit: forgot to mention. pricing is also very important.

I would agree with your assessment up to a certain point; where I disagree is when you suggest that it is necessary to have many models. The car industry and the mobile phone industry are very different and a direct comparison is perhaps not advisable, although some parallels can be drawn. SE, in my opinion, are not capable, at the moment, of producing a vast number of handsets to compete with Nokia, Motorola, etc. Hence SE must conform to a strategy of quality products designed to compete with more than one rival product.

I do think that we shall see an increase in the number of SE products available as SE, eventually, increases its market share and, hopefully, finds itself in a better economic position to challenge the main manufacturers.

you know what. se may hv the financial clout if only its backer Sony can pump in more money. seems like sony is still wary about se survivability (this is only my opinion - don't want to start a rumour here)

I think there is a certain limit to the amount of money Sony will be prepared to spend in order to keep SE going, there must come a point when SE has to stand on its own feet and survive and prosper without direct Sony financial intervention. Throwing money at SE isn't going to help it in the long term in my view.

@scotsboyuk:

let's hope se can continue to have the good luck/foresight started with the T610. the going would definitely get much tougher now for se (and other smaller players) given the so-called "awakening" of Nokia and the continuing charge of samsung.

for me, i'm just waiting for SE to come out with an affordable diet version of P900 (hopefully on series 60).

There were rumours some time ago about a watered down P800, but, as you know, we haven't seen anything like that yet. I would very much doubt that SE will release a Series 60 smartphone, not when they have used UIQ in three successive smartphones.

Hopefully SE can move forwards with the same innovative spirit that made the T610 such a success. The T610 is perhaps a good example of what I have been talking to you about in the PDA thread; stylish, feature packed and simple; customers loved it and it sold very well indeed. This is the sort of product SE need to focus on and if they get it right they will be able to punch far above their weight.

Unfortunately SE is not the only manufacturer anymore to provide with stylish phones that are feature packed. Almost all the others have phones with almost the same feature set and often at a better price. Tastes are hard to discuss, but the SE style appeals only to a part of the consumers. The part of consumers that likes the looks of Siemens or (God Forbid) Nokia is as large, or even a lot, lot, lot larger. Even Philips has gotten on the right track with phones that have a distinct style an can be feature packed. The market changes quickly.
