OK, I solved the problem. Sorry. But for everyone else, this is apparently the same issue that has plagued other FW upgrades on the p900.

Seems that at least a few things were fixed

Right! But who cares? What is important, is to have the latest firmware. At least for me.
Finally I was able to update my phone, but I had to do it on my PC at work. As a local administrator I could install necessary apps to do the online update.

Has anybody found a solution to the "communication error" that occurs when I try to update the firmware of the P910i?

I have tried many many times. but no luck!

Thank you.

Welcome to Esato!

I donīt know if it is the solution, but for me it worked when I tried on another computer that had nothing Sony Ericsson installed. From that point of view, it was a fresh install of the craddle and PC Suite on a Windows 2000 SP4 computer in a domain and with antivirus enabled, but no firewall.
Try that, or uninstall everything that is related to Sony Ericsson including the sync station. Also delete all entries in the registry.

Are you using XP SP2?

Hi,

Thank you for the reply! Yes I am using WinXP SP2. I have version CDA162005/6 and organizer version R1A30. What did you had in your previous versions?

CDA version 162005/1 and organizer version R1A30. It is an unbranded phone.

As a suggestion to everyone I would say try another pc if you are getting a communication error. I'm not even sure if I can attribute the issue to Win XP + SP2. Reason being is that I have a pc that often loses communication with the phone even during software installation. I often have to unplug and re-plug the base to the pc and try again. However, I have a laptop that is also equiped with Win XP + SP2 and I seem to have no issues at all. If you want to hear something even stranger is that I did have a P900 and another P910i conntected the the pc and they never had communication errors. But this one particular P910i and this pc has some connection inconsistencies. So in short, your life might be easier to simply use another pc. The bottom line is that there are trivial factors that would be close to impossible to diagnose when a unit behaves differently depending on the device it is connected to.

Does the P910 backup and restore now include voice dialings? I seemed to be re-recording mine on a monthly basis on the P9.

No, for some reason the backup and restore did not keep my voice dial recordings - luckily I don't use those very much ...

I have the same issue 'communication error' with my Laptop and I endedup using my Desktop and it worked fine. Both have the SE software installed on them and both are XP SP2 with McAfee anitvirus and ZoneAlarm Firewall running. But just to be sure I diabled the ZoneAlarm on the Desktop just before going to the update site and no error then. It worked the first time I tried there.

Had a similar "communication" error the first couple of times I tried the update, but the problem in my case appeared to be related to other USB devices I have attached (for example a TDK bluetooth dongle and a Matix Orbital MX2 USB LCD display).

The only thing I can think is that the update software was checking for the presence of USB serial ports (of which I had a few because of the Maxtix Orbital display and the Bluetooth adapter) and not being very clever about it - its almost as if looks for the first USB serial port it finds then tries to update through it rather than checking to see that there is actually a DSS-25 attached first.
After unplugging these devices two devices and rebooting the machine the update went through fine.
