Mac doesn't need it, unless you run Windows in addition to OS/X.
Windows creates cookie-like temporary info about every file you open and stores it away to enable things like My Recent Documents to work. As usual, it's not a bug but a feature!

Anyway, you can see how big the file can get and imagine what that does to your processing speed when you need to open a 7GB file at the same time as opening your document or running your App...
Oh and don't forget to defragment the hard drive regularly. I do mine about once a month and have noticed a significant drop in fragmented files since running CCleaner.
