Just read this:

"Pilot manufacturing line
・Mother glass size : 4.5G (730mm x 920mm)
Production capacity : 4K sheets/month
・Location : Ishikawa Plant in Nomi-gun, Ishikawa, Japan
・Commencement (plan) : Spring of 2014 (for trial manufacturing)"

@DACHA who knows, maybe you are right. but my understanding from reading it is that the manufacturing line will come from that plant and they wright "4k a month". this is ok for IFA announcement... unless they are going to manufacture the sheets in other plants also.

i think 2k will make even 5" display look better, like jumping from HD to FH - but maybe in less noticeable change. people said the same thing about HD>FH. not every change is supposed to be dramatic. either 2k or w-oled is a good move imo. with 2k they will probably find ways to preserve the same battery time.

Roughly; and without counting faulty screen or gaps between… about 88 per sheet… personally I would count more closer to 70 for real figure

Having 4000 sheets/months means 352k for 88 and 240k for 70…
Good number… but higher faulty screens will mean lower numbers… and higher cost also

2K screen on mobile is nothing more than dick-waving.

"Oh look how many pixels I have!"

Largely pointless, as it will only worsen battery life. The improved clarity of the display will barely be noticeable at all.

2K on a 6.5-7 inch device? Sure, I suppose that's fine, but on a 5.x inch screen? Nah...Not necessary. 1080p is more than enough.

@-XYZ
It's smarter to make conclusion after you hold FHD and 2K smartphones side by side in your hands. a lot of things in display are noticeable only after comparing two different devices.

The plant will be doing a trial manufacturing run, so 4,000 sheets is at best when the plant will be running at full capacity after all kinks are worked out, assuming yield will be good and production quality.

Assuming anywhere from 3-6m trial manufacturing, then the earliest time for production samples would be June-September time frame, which is not enough to warrant using in a flagship, there will be not enough to go around for mass scale production, let alone financially viable.

Sourcing panels from samsung would probably be cheaper and easier, but then the subpixels would not be RGBW but pentile.

Sony to make its push in US and China.
He also says they would withdraw from TVs if it continues bleeding money but it's unlikely.
