well, according to Dacha's source's info.. none of the panels used were TN, which is what many of you were so afraid of.

Personally, I'm perfectly happy with a VA panel since viewing angles aren't that important to me. Color accuracy/range and sharpness is what really matters to me.

Anyway, screen lotteries aren't anything new. Even Apple uses a screen lottery and the reason behind it is simply not putting all your eggs in one basket. If that info is true (not to doubt dacha or anything, but source info sometimes can become inaccurate for whatever reason) they seem to all be good to better quality panels (according to the video) with triluminos and x-reality tech. the only disadvantage of having one of the earlier Z/ZL screens seemingly being the viewing angle.. which to some isn't a disadvantage at all.

@moogoo

That is what I got from my source.

I am also totally fine with the display in my ZL. From the front it beats any display in color accuracy. My sister has an iPhone and she likes the display on the ZL better. If the LTE Z1 releases unlocked at the beginning of next month it will be her next phone. I got confirmation that the Z1 is coming to the US in early October. My source could not tell me if it will support AT&T LTE bands.

^^ Well they got better, as far as I know there aren't any Xperia Z/ZLs with AH-IPS panel, right?

And it's just a question of time until there are only perfect displays left

btw:
According to GSM Arena

Contrast 1513:1
Brightness 580 cd/m²
Black level 0.38 cd/m²

Over all one of the best LCDs out there, if not the best!

That is by far the best review yet and obviously on a full production unit

I'm not sure I believe the earlier post here claiming that old screen stock from Z/ZL was being used on Z1 retail version, that just doesn't seem right to me plus would triluminous work with these screens - sure they have to be manufactured for purpose, also modern production factories do not hold inventory or buy huge stock in advance - they drip feed the phone manufacturing facility almost on a daily basis, there are no big massive stores like there were years ago - everything is "just in time" nobody carries stock right down the supply chain

would they do this sort of thing for prototypes and preproduction runs - absolutely 100% but I would be very very doubtful this would happen for full retail version of a device - and don't forget the screens are bought in as an assembled unit to the Z1 manufacturing plants - although I don't know the answer to this I'd expect triluminous to be hard ware designed into the panel so a Z/ZL screen would be of no use

@geoffxx - from what i understand triluminos should work on all of them since it's a filter to the backlighting led.. but i honestly haven't read too much up on the tech..

@dacha - yes i agree. i think that's what matters most for someone who doesn't care about viewing angles. how does the phone look when you're actually using it for you (which is 99%) of the time. there is news that its releasing in singamore in early oct., so i hope its the same or sooner for the US _and_ that it supports AT&T LTE, which is the whole reason i've been waiting.. if it turns out by the first half of oct, there is no c6906 in sight.. i may just get c6903 and take advantage of european deals..

It seem that Z1 won't be able to record 1080p@60 fps out of the box, so let's hope for an update.

for me that review sets a stake in the ground going forward - it is objective and complete and seems to be the first to be done on a full production retail version of the Z1 - well done GSMA for being the first out of the gate

Btw. since Sony is having a screen lottery, we (the buyers) should have a price lottery in which we would offer Sony to pay 100 $/€ around the price Sony is asking.

But seriously, the amount of quality disparity between the screens in the lottery is really shameful. It goes from last year's Z panel to some of the best on the market today. Imagine there was a PS4 lottery in which some consoles would only reproduce 720p resolution and some would do 1080p.

as far as I know the backlighting is built into the whole display unit and is supplied to the Sony factory like that, so I seriously doubt a panel designed for the XZ would be triluminous capable, I remember a guy having an issue with the backlight of an XZ - the whole panel had to be replaced

I believe the quality disparity is simply down to the fact that all the test units (except GSMA) are preproduction preview units and not retail - they are probably told that when they receive it but don't share that particular info when publishing results (some do) - so until we get more credible reviews like GSMA you'd probably be better ignoring most of it

That white LEDs are just blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor layer, and the LED backlight array is easily separated from the main panel and the phosphor layer is essentially washed off (that is actually how Sony make triluminous LED backlight arrays, using a SiC blue LED for pure blue colour).
