Faster processor speed is not always the correct solution. Remember that faster speeds need more battery power and generate more heat. RAM on the other hand is always sure to enhance performance.

Well, thats the e90, and what the p990 successor will bring...i agree with you. But even on pcs the first thing to improve performance is always adding more ram

Agree with you partially. RAM can improve overall system performance but it cannot improve performance of individual app. And a phone is not like a PC with many of background programs running.
Which is faster in recoding dvd to divx?
1. 500Mhz with 2GB RAM?
2. 1.6GHz with 512Mb RAM?
The answer is obvious.
There are some apps which requires a faster cpu period. Just like Skype or 3D gaming (like the new ngage platform). So the slower p700 cpu may not even support the real skype when it is out for the symbian platform.

The questions are:
1. Is P700 going to be announced on 8th of may?
2. Despite the answer to q#1 when it will be released?
3. How much is it going to cost?

The answer is actually not obvious unless you have good knowledge about your applications and the characteristics of your pheriperals (busses, graphic chip, memory, i/o etc.). If we look at a desktop system, your 1.6 GHz CPU can perform worse than your 500 MHz CPU if it has to swap apps in and out to the disk frequently due to lack of memory.
A device is not faster than its weakest link, so unless you know for sure
that the CPU is the weakest link, bumping it up will must likely not do you any good. I had an old 600 MHz desktop that did not play videos that well. The solution in my case was to exchange the grahic card to a better one.
Basically, your claims are not obvious unless all required parameters for the calculus are known (just staring on the CPU speed is not enough).

As ares has pointed out, RAM can improve individual program performance, depends on the program. If you are using Excel, you want as much RAM as you can get regardless of CPU speed.
But you contradict yourself. You are right when saying a phone is not like a PC, so why the examples of DVD recording or 3-D gaming? I know that a lot of people will object to my including 3-D here, but the P series is not meant to rival a playstation. It is a phone/PDA. What this means for me is:
- Good sound quality
- A wide range of connection options
- Easy to use and capable web, e-mail etc. programs.
- I definitely want to be able to input using the screen. This habit probably dates back to my Palm days but I just feel restricted without it.
- PDA functions, preferably supplied by SE, or 3rd party if desired. Contact management, calendar functions, tasks, to do, alarms etc.
- The form factor. I am not willing to carry anything larger than the P990. I used to have a Nokia Communicator, after the initial enthusiasm was over it got its permanent place on my side table.
- The ability to view and edit word and excel documents.
- Music and FM radio.
- Almost as important as all the above, reasonable battery life. I shouldn't need to recharge in the middle of the day.
- The quality level of video available on the P990 is enough for me.
Any additional features are a plus but are not a must in my opinion.

very likely to be announced on the 8th May. Rumours are saying there is a possible delay till the end of the year but this isnt confirmed. Otherwise, expect the latest trend of announcement and quick release. Not sure about the cost, definitely cheaper than E90 and i would imagine fairly expensive when first released.

mib1800, agreed, but in the p700 vs n95 case the processor is not 2 times more powerfull AFAIK...
