@Whiz
You make more sense to me than anyone else in this thread of late, and this coming from someone who neither believes in gods or God or worships a diety.

Ok most of that is speculation and media brain washing ...
How is that different to the views you have expressed on Hinduism in this thread?

Religion has always tended to confuse the human mind. To understand God is not as complicated as to understand religion. People have always used religion and generated fear from it to dominate upon others.

The Glorious Quran - Verses 37-40 from Chapter 78 states:
From the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, Allah Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him.
The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by Allah Most Gracious, and He will say what is right.
That Day will be the sure Reality: Therefore, whoso will, let him take a straight return to his Lord!
Verily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see the deeds which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were mere dust!"

Hmmm... Ganesha statues drinking Milk!
That was the biggest hoax of the year 1995!
I call them superstition and blind faith..
But hey!
Another point.
Some people believed it was Ganesha drinking milk, they believed it, they felt peace..
If some people felt happy about the fact that a statue drank milk and that it was some sort of a message from god, whats wrong in it?
Wait doesnt the statue drink milk like once a year? coz my neighbors does!

Coz I try and explain to him as best I could that the milks at the bottom of the saucer, and hes like it probably had enough...
@ scotts
I have lotsa Hindhu friends, Im not speculating just calling it how it is.

I've not come across any tradition or custom in Hinduism where people "feed" milk to statues....which is the reason why i am curious to know about your neighbour's yearly milk giving ceremony.
I've not heard of any festival in India which has this ceremony as a significant part.
I would like to know on what day or festival does he carry out this?
He's your neighbour rite?
Pls ask him and let me know.

This is interesting.
What is the reason behind your "concern" towards his "superstition"?
1.You want to prove that scientifically it is not possible for a statue to drink milk.
2.You want him to stop worshipping a "lifeless powerless"
idol which he considers to be a manifestation of God.
And by showing to him that the idol isn't actually drinking the milk you want to prove that HIS god is not God?
3.By "proving" to him that this wierd custom (for you) is just one of the many reasons why "my faith is better than yours"?
What is the reason behind your "concern" @786, if not amongst the three possible reasons that i've stated, you are free to furnish your reasons for this.

whew, finally caught up since my absence
there's definately been an awful lot of tripe pedalled in the last 20 or so pages, and a few good points too.
@whizz: have to say i would agree with scots assessment.
i think there is a misconception between "idols" being used as the focus for belief, and idols as the object of belief. most religions have symbols and icons, which isn't the same as believing those symbols have any divine power in and of their own right. continuing this line of reasoning, assuming that "god" is everywhere those symbols could be considered another aspect his existence. they represent god and his divinity/glory/power/etc. but that does not mean they share it. they merely serve as an aid to worship rather than the inspiration for it.
however (and i'm being cheeky) if one was to say that "statues can't drink milk" that statement is inherently limiting of god's power. the obvious rebuttal would be "are you saying god couldn't make a statue drink milk if he so chose?" in that example the statue would have no divinity in and of itself, but would be an instrument of god's will.
but i'm not saying i believe in milk-drinking statues. beer drinking statues....well, that's something else

Welcome back gelfen.
@786, Thanks for letting me know...
But am still confused about the festival which demanded them to "feed" idols!
And remember that i said this:

Anyway, you have still not answered why you are sooo concerned about his customs?
I also see a tinge of sarcasm in your posts about your Hindu Neighbour.
