Which is the cheapest, easily available, and robust type of memory card among DV, mini SD, micro SD, and others...
If I had to choose, Compact Flash. At least that is the fastest and biggest capacity one with 16GB already available and 32Gb coming real soon. Not cheapest anymore since all others memory format has become quite cheap this days.
The thing I hate about this is every years new memory format being introduced while it is unnecessary to do so. Hopefully SE stop with M2 format (that is small enough and if it goes smaller some ppl may loose it. Micro-SD (trans) also already small enough.
M2 and micro sd have been necessary steps for devices as small and feature packed as mobile phones. But now they need to catch up with multimedia needs by adding gigabytes rather than reducing the size.
I predict we will see M2 climb to 32GB quickly in the next few years. At 32GB, the cards will be hitting the architecture ceiling, and whole new card designs (including architecture) will need to be developed. It's likely that 32GB plus memory stick expansion ports will not be backwards compatible with sub-32GB cards.

Well yes for M2 but I think mini SD is already small enough and no need for micro SD. I don't like too small since I will definitely misplace it in may chaotic desk.

I never had more than 1GB on any memory flash that I own, CF for my dSLR, M2, SD, MMC, Xd, etc. But I will get the new 4GB CF (one of Sanddisk Extreme IV or Lexar Pro UDMA) for my next dSLR purchase later this year. I am just wondering hot it feels to have 32GB
Anyway I also think they must improve read/write speed as well. It is not funny to wait for almost 3 hr to fill up your 32GB M2 (at 3MBps).

Just happened to see a micro sd and whoa was shocked at its size....
i'd say this is the limit.. of miniaturisation...

M2 speed is 160Mbits (20MBps). 3MBps is DCU-60 cable speed, a card reader is fully USB2 compliant, so you will get the full 160Mbits transfer speed of M2. That's less than half an hour for 32GB, not so bad. Besides, they are likely to increase the speed of M2 before it reaches 32GB (the speed can usually be increased without changing the architecture)

I got my sandisk 512 MS pro duo together with the adapter last year for my sony dsc m2 camera. Now, the adapter couldn't work normally. 2 weeks ago I bought Sony 1gb M2 for my K800i. It bundled with 2 adapters one for MS pro duo and the other for MS Pro. I quite satisfied with the performance of my Sony 1 GB M2, it is working well. I think I'll go for Sony.

Mm, last time I check it is 10MBps read and 3MBps write for M2. Are you sure you are not confusing it with MSPro Duo spec? If my memory serve me right it is posted in Sandisk website. Probably Sony brand is faster which I doubt since they are likely to buy OEM from Sandisk anyway.
Edit: It's clearly written here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_Stick#Transfer_speeds (M2 - 160MBit/s)
http://uk.shopping.com/xPO-Sony-M2 (minimum write 15MB/s)

I very much doubt M2 will be slower than existing memory sticks, and as the links above show, they are just as fast as MS Pro. Infact M2 cards are fully compatible with the MS Pro standard, both in speed and theoretical maximum capacity.
3MB/s is stupidly slow for a memory card.

Well since I quote directly from manufacturer website then it is safe to say that 3MBps is (perhaps?) minimum write speed of all M2 from Sandisk. I use Sandisk USB 2.0 8in1 device (using MS adapter) and 2.0 USB and it pretty much confirm Sandisk speed (I fill 800MB around 20+min around 3-4MBps). My experince using K800 and DCU-60 cable is worse than that. Seems that K800 is not as optimized as my wife Z610 for USB transfer.
Now is there any literature from Sony about the real speed of their M2 card. Actually 3MBps is about 20x which is quite normal (not that slow for 1-2GB capacity but seriously lacking for 32GB one). I am pretty much satisfied with my M2 card for daily use (I got no delay when reading something from it in my phone or when transfering/write a java game/apps or a picture). Other than trying to fill it in one transfer then it is OK.
Only pro memory flash had speed in excess of 266x (Extreme IV) which is about 40MBps (but stll not sustained speed). The Lexar new (coming soon)UDMA is rated at 300x and 45MBps sustained speed.
Edit: well you said it already, theoretical speed which is ussually way faster than what you get in reality.
Also here is joint press release of Sandisk and Sony co-developing M2 and should make it clear that Sandisk is a good brand. They can be cheaper than Sony maybe because even Sony buy from Sandisk and relabel to Sony.
