@xxrawdogxx,
Yea, I experienced the same thing when I had a class, the phone shut down twice during the day. Battery was around 40-60%. That was with the old R4B firmware. I also experienced weird 'The message was damaged and was repaired' error message when opening a sms message. An hour after that all the messages and data in Messaging was corrupted and deleted unexpectedly, dunno how.
Glad I am not the only one looking around on the P990 post nobody had mentioned it about the phone turning off.
I have tried a few things now so can report after some testing.
It is not a battery problem I have taken my working battery from my m600 and I have thrashed the dame phone going crazy opening apps one after the other pushing the system hard to try and crash it. I have had mp3 going for the past hour from my 2gb duo I have even swapped the memory card back to the 64mb it came with. The phone turned off at 40%
Every time it has happened I turn the unit back on and it is around the mark you said 40-60% the worst thing about it is that you don't know it has happened till you check your phone. I like the phone but don't want to keep checking it to see if it is still on. I have missed two important phone calls so far because of this issue.
I got a message on screen today also the battery was flat and I put it on charge just after the ericsson logo It displayed "replacing (internal) batteries" something along them lines does anyone know what thats all about?

Hmmm seems like this new firmware is giving me one major major hassle. in the shortcut screen in flip open mode, seems like i cannot add any new shortcuts. Its now crashed a total of 5 times in the past 5 mins, with the error...application closed...application: Activity menu...Reason Code: KERN_EXEC...reason number is 3
Very strange and very annoying, hope SE is listening to this as this is unacceptable.
Anyone else having these problems??

Spawn,
no my Activity screen is fine. But noticed shortcuts don't get restored after a backup.

i got these strange problems.
1-Not sure if it is due to the upgrade. When i charge the phone last night, the backlight does not go off. It just kept it on while charging. I unplugged it and waited for the next 5 minute, its still the brightly lighted. It was only after a phone on/off that it behaves back to the normal way, that is to dim the backlight.
2-Adding a RSS link from teh browser is just so unpredicatable. At times it works well. Click on the RSS icon beside the tab, and the link will be added to the RSS reader, prompting to save it. Other times, nothing happens at all. Is there some sort of sequence that i need to do to have it working?
Anyone has this problem?

Same as spawn.
I can not add any shortcuts in my activity menu in flip open mode. Works ok in FC mode.
Could someone please click the appointment icon in the today mode of the activity menu and see if the calendar opens? It does not open on mine from that position.
Also from stanby FO mode if you hit the little arrow bottom left and you then hit new>appointment the calendar does not open again.
However if you open the calendar first and you hen try these actions they are both ok...Surely this needs to be addressed.

@avantis, mine has the same calendar behaviour
these issues were present in the M600 but have since been fixed
I am now reliant on the P990 for the next few days as my TyTN is packed to go back for replacement but already I have had to power off twice this morning using the long power button hold as the phone just hung. all I am doing is listening to the radio and browsing at the same time! I do think its related to gprs/umts transitions though as I am on the train

@masseur
Thank you.
In your experience, if one reinstalls the same firmware is there a chance that this may improve / iron out some small problems?

@Avantis
there is some kind of caching problem with UIQ3 to do with context sensitivity. Sometime in FO mode my Activity Menu is actually that from the FC mode!
No problems with adding shortcuts in any mode.
I can go to Calendar from the Activity Menu in FO mode (when it finally shows the right screen!)
I had a problem with some menus in the Messaging app the problem went away after a Master Reset from the service menu

@jah
Thank you.
Your problem seems to be smaller but still there.
It appears as though we will have to wait for the next FWU to iron these out..

after making my last post here the P990 again hung (Opera specifically).
This time I could not even get into task manager to end it so yet another restart.
I'm beginning to think I could have lived with the stick "back" key on the TyTN rather than this, how can I put it in technical terms?... crap!
I actually think its the combination of radio and gprs/umts switching because I didn't have so much trouble when I wasn't using the radio
after that last crash I switched back to M600 for browsing and had no problems for the rest of my train journey
