Ares, I'm commenting on observed fact, you're commenting on internal whispers and rumours. SE themselves, publically, say the P1 is a 5th generation P. So which generation was the P990?
Look at the press release -
http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]1_1&zone=pc&lm=pc3_1&prid=7951 - the very first bullet point is a direct comparison between the P1 and the P990 (it's 25% smaller if you didn't know). Now tell me it's not being sold as a replacement for the P990?
Don't tell me there's something else waiting in the wings, of course there is, there always is - but whatever it is, it didn't get announced yesterday, and it's not going to beat the P1 to the "next generation" P-series title.

Answers to why P1 dosnīt have GPs and HSDPA.
Why no GPS?
-You can use bluetooth GPS. Itīs not build in because of batterylife.
Why no hsdpa?
-SE choosed to not include it. Not enough intrest yet in our target group.

So what??? Its a fact the P1 is an upgrade to the P990 in terms of smartphones, no one is saying otherwise. Like the k810 is a generation above the k800, but not its true successor (thatīs sofia)...
Man, do what you like...near the end of the year, when the real p990 will be presented (hspda, internal gps, faster processor, flip),etc, we can talk, and then i will be curious to read your opinion

What if

have decided not to make a second generation "M" series and instead come up with a fifth generation "P" series to replace the "M600" and then the sixth generation "P" series will replace the "P990"?

So in other words Ares, you're agreeing with me that the P1 is a
replacement for the P990, yes?
I'm not talking about spiritual successor, I'm talking direct, model-line replacement, because that's what batesie was talking about in the first place. The P1 replaces the P990, the same way that the P910 replaced the P900, and the P900 replaced the P800.
It's not a gigantic leap into the dark like the P910 -> P990 transition, and I don't doubt that there will be another of those to come in the future, but that'll be replacing or sitting alongside the P1 - not the P990.

as before, I don't think that p1i is the successor to the p990i. it might be the 'next generation' P series, but that could mean anything. K810i is the next generation K series, does that mean it replaces the K800i?
as far as I can speculate, the M series is being integrated into the P series, which would segment the P series into 2 types of smartphones. one based on the form factor of m600i, and you get the point.
@nanu*1
exactly...
@boingg
you can't say it's a direct replacement, it clearly is not. IMO it's a stopgap device to sate the masses at the very least while SE prepare the p990i's successor, or a direct replacement for m600i which has been integrated into the P series...

The P1i looks to be a p990 successor for people with M600s that want a camera and the p990 owner with enough money to want to upgrade or it maybe their upgrade time as this phone is expected around 1 year after the release of the p990.
If another P series phone is due at end of this year/most probably next year, that will be for the P990 owner that didnt want to upgrade to p1i and the people with enough money to upgrade again.
M600 succesor should not really have a camera.

I am a P990 owner and I won't be downgrading to the P1i, but if I had an M600 I would sell that in anticipation of the P1i!
Get my drift?

No idea why se just didn't put a big sign on the p1 saying - NOT THE P990 REPLACEMENT But thats what a manager from se told me last night at the press announcement. Lets see how many people still talk about it...
