They are leaving it a little late to use Meego - but then again maybe it's almost ready.
Nokia are shedding smartphone marketshare and I think the reason is s60 just can't compete with the fluidity of the Android variants.

Apparently Nokia will use Meego on their future higher end devices and flagships, whilst Symbian 3 and 4 will be used on their lesser handsets, hopefully instead of S40 which is now extinct and terrible to use even on the most basic of handsets.
Either way the future looks uncertain. Android seems to be a safe bet for people who want to keep up with the cutting edge of smartphone operating systems but one thing worries me.
Google are becoming far too involved with peoples lives. Im sure pretty soon they'll know who you are, where you live, who your friends are, your blood type, everything. I cannot walk down the street without having to interact with something linked back to Google these days. We're feeding them too much personal information as a whole.

Is anyone else sick of hearing about the supposed death of Symbian? Yes there are problems that (hopefully) S^3, 4 and 5 will eliminate but it is far from dead or dying (even with its problems it is still the worlds most popular smartphone OS and will likley be for some time to come).
According to Anssi himself Symbian is not being relegated to lesser handsets and it is still Nokia's 'smartphone' OS of choice to compete with IOS and Android. Meego is going to be their 'connected device' OS of choice. Don't take my word for it though (because it's not worth a thing) but please have a read of
this.
I'm no fanbois, I quite like that Android and IOS have appeared to push the smartphone arena and I respect them both for their strengths, but I do like Symbian and get a bit miffed with the doom and gloomers who seem to buy into the anti Symbian hype without first digging a bit deeper. Symbian has definitely been a bit poorly for the last couple of years but the prognosis is nowhere near as bleak (at the moment at least) as some would like us all to believe.

I wouldn't be surprised that Symbian is dead, this could be why SE is ignoring us and not giving us any information about future updates. Or they could be doing this on purpose and hit us with a rather large update and never have plans to give us another update but since we're so used to them being quiet about it, we pretty much won't bother them for another update again. Seems like a pretty shady plan but not surprised if SE does execute this and execute us.

yes i am...
i've been using symbian handsets for 6 years now and i'm still happy with it. symbian on s/// handsets could be dying, or maybe it was death from the satio's release. i am very disappointet from s///'s version of s^1 from the very first day when i got my satio last september, but this is a problem of s/// and not of symbian!

@ hammera - no its not dead and i do love Symbian myself, always have. But theres one thing you're forgetting.
Android isnt limited to just Google's own phones, unlike IOS and unfortunately Symbian with Nokia. Symbian is being installed on much less phones than ever before, whereas Android is on HTC, Motorola, SE, Samsung and many more manufacturers handsets. Maybe its because of Nokia's own investment in Symbian or other manufacturers displeasure with Symbian as opposed to Android.

And Symbian isn't just limited to Nokia. They are definitely the biggest Symbian manufacturer (and they will be for some time to come) but there are others. Fujitsu and Sharp are big users in Japan and Samsung and SE have not yet stated categorically that they have given up on Symbian (please note the yet!).
Android has become fashionable as it's new and has a pretty exterior and the current situation isn't too disimilar to the one Symbian found itself in 6 or 7 years ago when every major manufacturer was producing a Symbian phone (Siemens, Motorola, Samsung, Sendo, Nokia, SE, Mitsubishi) rather than a Windows CE phone (which after years of being basically pants is still kicking around).
Symbian is having a rough ride at the moment and the blame for that lies squarely at Nokia's feet for being complacent about S60 as well as SE and Motorola for totally screwing UIQ (If only UIQ4 had made it out the door
) but now that Symbian is open source (and this is a message that all Symbian fans need to shout loudly to all the ignorant tech journo's and fanbois out there) there is a real chance that it can reclaim its crown, we just need some damned phones to appear.

I know Symbian isnt just limited to Nokia, but like i said you do find it installed in less and less new phones these days from companies other than Nokia.

Nokia has to take the blame for it. They own it and they have not kept pace with what is going on in either the smart phone area or software (Symbian).
