I see the EU is enforcing the sale of mobile phone sold from next year to have replaceable batteries. Are we going back to the 'clip on' rear battery cover, like Xperias of old?

I wonder if the next Xperia has this feature or will it skip the EU altogether and is this the reason for the redesigned camera bump?

I saw this news. I don't think that's the reason for the square bump. I think sony will simply skip the EU. The money it will cost to redesign to follow the new law wouldn't be worth it. And to change all their manufacturing as well. It just would not make sense. Not without astronomical costs that would pass onto the consumer and sony just doesn't sell enough for that.

I'll be very curious how Samsung and apple handle the new law. Especially apple. It is not easy to have a replaceable battery and still have the water resistance levels we currently have. Phones will definitely need to be larger too to accommodate the extra geometries and hardware necessary to make it possible. As it is, you can technically replace your battery on your Sony phone. It just takes a skilled hand and knowledge but it's possible.

Waterproofing is not an issue. After all Xperia has a headphone jack, microphones all over the place and yet its still one of the best waterproof devices out there. Chinese ODMs will come up with some solution and all phones will adopt that solution in manufacturing process. I don't think that would be the reason Xperia will pull out of EU but they will exit EU market all together at some point, maybe 2027 or maybe 2028. I would be surprised if they last three more years. It took US four years to drop Xperia completely once they announced the US as defocused region. Last year EU was quietly marked as defocused region by dropping out of bunch of markets.

Would not phone manufacturers be forewarned about any upcoming regulation such as this? It would seem a bit harsh to impose such regulations on phone makers, knowing each device takes a number of years from development to market.

Surely there would be a heads-up of some sort, giving them time to develop some sort of solution.

Edit: It seems the regulation was first mooted in 2024.

Those are all static structures that the consumer can't modify or move around easily. . They will need redesign things to make it easy for an average consumer to replace batteries.

A solution like the K850i would be good, just undo a flap and slide the battery out. I doubt it would be that simple though. I hope they don't skip the EU altogether, or we'll all be importing from Japan.

the UK isn't the EU. You'd be fine. Even now, they are only in limited countries in the EU, I think. So, for them to skip out on the EU, it would not be that big of a deal. Definitely would cost less than trying to change designs and manufacturing to comply with the new regulation which not only requires the ability to remove and replace the battery but also for sony to make spare batteries available for purchase.

if you think about it Apple and Samsung will have to do the replaceable battery as they will definately sell in the EU.

So I would say Sony will do the same as they always pushed their green credentials in marketing.

So it's safe to say that the other regulated phones will already be in development. Will they make EU specific phones as well as Global editions?
