OK, in the absence of any new firmware from Orange, is there an easy way of reloading the original SE software onto the phone (e.g. without sending it off somewhere) so that I can configure my shortcuts?

Yes.

You need a T28 cable and then download software from www.totalserver.net. I think you need to pay for a credit or something.

Personally i'm not going to mess with my phone. After 3 months with Orange branding i cant say i miss something that was never there (shortcuts).

Does anybody know if the Sony Ericsson Update Service resolves this problem? i would try it only i dont have the syncstation hardware thingy, it wont let me do it via bluetooth.

I received my k700i this monday, and was trying to change the front menu items, to be honest i cant see myself ever using the "Orange World" so its a bit pointless that being there, i'd rather have Bluetooth on the menu or something else useful. Is this the shortcuts you're all referring too?

Are we certain that an unbranded K700i phone has the option to change this? I cant decide if its worth returning this new contract phone and going with a different provider.... hrmmmmm

Just thought I'd let you know that apparently a contract phone from either http://www.mobileshop.co.uk or http://www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk will be unbranded. They basically send a SIM free phone, but with a SIM.

I've ordered mine from the latter, so I'll find out for proper soon enough.

hrm i just phoned onestopphoneshop myself, they said the orange ones all come branded, the guy said its illegal for them to give an unbranded phone away on the orange network. However.. he did say Vodaphone and O2 are unbranded....

strange... voda apparantly distort the k700i more than anyone!

Were there ever any updates from Orange on changing the firmware or did it all go queit in the end?

Iv just bought an Orange Branded phone (bit unsure and disappointed really but Ill keep it). I know the changes arent that bad because you can still change the themes to anything you want as far as iv been told, correct me if im wrong. Ill just get it flashed / unbranded at the end of its warrenty. In the meantime it would be nice if it did get fixed.

I just got an Orange branded K700i to replace my unbranded T630 (which I only had for a couple of weeks - had 3 T630s all with bad software so went for K700 on Orange).

There were a few things I grew used to on the T630 that kind of ruined the K700. If I never had a T630, I'd never know what was missing without trying an unbranded K700. To be honest, I kind of like the shortcuts on the desktop but I don't like not being able to edit them. I also hate the lack of the more button that allowed me to turn bluetooth on and off nice and easily. The thing that bugged me most was all the annoying Orange crap thrown at you like the Start-up and Shutdown shows but I'm assuming they can be easily changed by replacing the images.

I might consider contacting Orange over the lack of firmware updates (I'm on R2L) and ask them if they'll allow me flash the phone with SE's firmware at a service centre.

Speaking of firmware updates, can you get the firmware updates for an Orange K700i on the SE site yet? I understand Orange K700i's were blocked from it. If I can, what's the latest available on the SE site?

I don't see any reason to wait until the end of its warranty - Orange seem quite happy for you to update the flash - they pointed me at the SE update site.
The fact that it then says blocked is another matter... but davinci works, as (according to others) does setools.

Having done mine, I can confirm the K700 is a much better phone for it! I had seriously considered sending mine back, but now I'm much happier.

(Battery life, though, is still rubbish, but I guess that's the price you pay for colour, radio, bluetooth etc)
