No, i cant talk about the past here at esato, but i can talk of the here and now, and it seems just dandy to me. It looks silly, pehaps even petty, when you all talk about "the good old days" so much. There is nothing wrong with it, but thats ALL the veterans do. Perhaps they are out of touch, and instead of trying to scare new members off by waving your fists and growling, they should make an effort to become more involved with them, instead of making snide and smart-ass comments. THEN esato would be absolutely brilliant.

i have to say i see very little of this waving fists that you talk about. even if a few people do this why would a new member be put off. its an internet site noone knows who you are or anything about you. as far as i know scotsboy could be male/female maybe from scotland if so that makes them 1 of 4 million people.
its down to confiendence if you are scared off by someone telling you to search then you may as well give up on doing most things in life as you lack confidence.
this site 99% of the time is very friendly i m on every day not posting just reading and i dont see people getting flamed or attacked. not sure if you were about when vermaina was about as you would know what flaming was then, though i always felt there was a sense of humour with it.
but on the whole i really dont think there is a much of this fist waving and believe its making a mountain out of a mole hill

I see a middle ground between slattery69's line of thought & meths. I am new, yet I post extensively. Times, I write things that border on presumption. But no wise-cracker is going to cow me. The pouncy fellows need to change, but the issue of whether to post or not is subject to the newbie himself.

@slattery69
Hear hear! I don't see that remembering a time I liked on Esato 'puts newbies off' or marginalises them in any way. Am I calling for there to be a ban on new members? Certainly not, as I said previously I welcome and actively encourage new members to join Esato.
I don't see that the veterans are attacking newbies, if anything there seems to be something of the reverse; those members who have been around for a while having a pop at the veterans. Why shouldn't we want our friends to come back again? Why shouldn't we want those members who we knew and loved to become active again? We want the newer members to be able to enjoy the fun we used to have along with the fun we have at the moment.
I fully agree with the sentiment that someone who is put off by something as petty as 'use the search' really is a bit of a wet lettuce. The ones dispensing such nuggets of wisdom tend to be those members who have a few posts under their belts and have a tad too much 'confidence', and perhaps get a little carried away. They don't necessarily mean any harm, but perhaps they just get too enthusiastic about Esato.
How many active members does Esato actually have? There are over fifty thousand registered users, but how many actually post? I would imagine it is a small percentage of that, and I doubt the majority who don't post have been 'put off' by veterans.

To buttress a point from Scots, I do know that the generality of people on my regional thread are newbies. And they haven't ben "pounced" on yet, but they hardly post anywhere outside of that thread. Yes, the majority of Esatoeans hardly post at all. There must be some other factor beyond the fear of "pouncy" (would-be) veterans.

@AYA
There do seem to be quite a few people who post almost if not exclusively in the regional forums. Has this always been the case?
I think you are quite correct though, there must be something else preventing the majority of members from being active. I would suggets that it is probably a case of members not always being interested enough in mobiles to actually become active in the community, rather they are just looking for information.

@Scots: Yes, I know a few who never venture (to post) outside of their regional thread. And yes, the point about those seeking just info is smack bang on. On my reg thread, there are those with no interest in phones, but who just want to enjoy some social interactions.

I suspect it's probably the other way around. people coming here specifically for onfo on their mobile phones have a lot of stuff to read. Most of them do seem to read. then ask the questions. Those questions get answered and the talk continues. All this on mobile phones.
Strange enough this whole discussion is being led by people who are predominant in the non-mobiles section, ie not the 'core business' of the site in the first place.
Not wishing to 'degrade' the non-mobile sections in any way, but to me, and presumably to many who came here for phones info, it's not the main thing and it's not what esato is about.
And funny enough the mobiles part seems to have seen little change, other than a few more unfamiliar faces, a few more questions (some of them similar to other questions) and a few more suggestions to search the site.
It's really pretty much the same, like a cricular movement for every phone that is released and probably not worth getting excited about.
On another trail of thought: I wish this self-invented distinctuion between 'veterans' and 'newbies' would just go away.

@Vlammetje
I prefer the term 'established member' myself.
You raise an interesting point. Esato seems to have developed a very strong community, one that seems to have created such discussions as this. If Esato were just about mobile phones then I very much doubt whether there would be discussions like this one.
Perhaps Esato has evolved into more than the sum of its parts and this has led to the creation of those who do not post about mobile phones a great deal, if at all.

I would agree with that, but "veterans" and "newbies" goes on in every online forum, so it wont go away in a hurry.
