So I have seen on the Sony support forum, allegedly regarding updates to UK sim free handsets all network operators have to agree to the update, hence the problems with the s, individual networks bringing out their own updates but turning down the sim free updates allegedly

Conspiracy theory anyone

I tried using Emma, but it says that my phone is locked, even though it's neither branded nor locked to a network. Do I need to unlock the bootloader?

I've never used EMMA but I'm guessing it means network locked.

Just wondering, but why does Emma need an unlocked bootloader?

so would it be worth updating via the method outlined here or wait for ota or pc companion, would really like to have JB on my phone but don't want to update that's something that's not specific to my generic SIM free phone.
thanks for your patience guys!
Chris.

That's entirely up to you, as long as you follow the guides for using flashtool you should be ok, if you do upgrade this way then I would suggest allowing flashtool to perform a full wipe in the process, don't worry your memory card will be intact
Personally I'm going to wait this time until the update hits pcc.
