I got the same error when I tried to connect, early morning today. I checked the internet speed above 100kbps. speed is not a problem...
If speed is good then change the Yahoo! Messenger version. i.e. If you are using US version then uninstall it and use Indian Version.

previously, over an year ago, you could send emails to your phone as mms thru the address
91xxxxxxxxxx@airtelmms.com where xx represents your airtel no. But it no longer works, and the email rebounds saying delivery failure.
Also this was very fast, unlike sms from net

If you want to use Opera for this trick, just folloow these tips:
1) Go to Tools->Preferences
2) Click the "Advanced" tab on the window.
3) Select "Network" in the left side. You should see like this
4) Click the "Proxy Servers" button.
5) You should see a screen like the following image. Just do like in image. and click OK. It will work.
6) Post the results here.

Lol....I was hanging my mobile bcoz to get signal. The signal was NIL at that time in my room. I was getting 4 steps in the window.
Try to connect GPRS in the range of a other tower and post me reply.
