I was on website a few days ago that showed where all the 850 and 1900 coverage was, on a Cingular map of the U.S. , Canada, P.R. , virgin Islands.
I'll see if I can find it again. Most coverage is 1900, although the midwest has 850 in certain locations.
If you have a 850/1800/1900 phone, no problems with signal regardless of where you are.
900/1800/1900 phones, will fail in a 850 location. It all depends wether you have no need to be in any of the 850 locations.

I don't think the 1900 sites are gonna go anywhere, there are far too many of them. If anything Cingular might stop putting up 1900 sites, but I doubt they would start removing them. Don't get too worried.

In regards to the westcoast (where Cingular invested about 1 Billion in improving the 1900 network a few years back), the 1900 band has been purchased by T-mobile and it's in a 4 year rental agreement by Cingular (while they improve the 850 band that AT&T started there). This means that no matter where in the states that you're at, if you have a nationwide plan, you will not see a decrease in 1900 mhz coverage.
