i've narrowed down my bookshelf speaker selection to replace my 15-year old Bose Continental to the following:
a) Acoustic Energy AE-300
b) Boston Acoustics VR-M50
c) Energy Veritas 2.1
d) Mordaunt Short MS-902
comments will be appreciated...

arnold: I haven't heard the Accoustic Energy bookshelves. Heard the satellites (Aegis or Aegeos I think they're called) and am very impressed. I listened to them again last Saturday while playing cards.
The Veritas 2.1 is a very good pair

Should I shelve my B&W speakers in the future for another brand, the Veritas would defintiely be in my short list.

@arnold: If you can afford it, go with the Veritas

then invite me to your home for some listening pleasure
Seriously, like I mentioned, the Acoustic Energy satellites are excellent. Based on just the satellites, I'm sure the AE300 should sound very good. If I'm not mistaken, this is from the range below their reference series.
Or you can go with the B&W CDM1 NTs. These are sometimes used in professional studios abroad. If you want something more affordable, the B&W 601 S3 are pretty good as well.
