A good example of this is Sony's reluctance to make a netbook because they "thought it unnecessary". But a little further down the track when netbook popularity exploded, Sony release the VAIO P. Almost identical size, almost identical specs, but guess what... Sony won't call it a netbook! This is likely to be an attempt to avoid being associated with what is essentially "the cheap laptop market" because Sony is known for its premium products. It also allows them to charge a much higher price without too many questions asked. However, the P has still been labeled a netbook by most of the media.
Yep, the P series is a waste of time, yeah it looks nice, it's sexy, thin etc but it has less power then the Acer Aspire 1 in the base P model yet it costs over twice as much, it won't sell no where near as many due to that.
Look at the PS3, I have one, bloody love it, but they are STILL selling them at a loss as it cost them so much to develop, IMO if it didn't sell then Sony would be half or a third the size it is.
But it's not the same with it's phones, most of it's phones are the same value as it's competitors IMO.
And a touch screen smart phone device about 12mil thin with a 5mpx or more camera and a nice small 2.8 or 3 inch screen would be damn fantastic, sell by the bucket load and is what a lot of people want. To say it's not 'boring' is daft. You going to say the iPhone is 'boring'? Ask all the kids out there.

We are talking about Sonyericsson, not just Sony, but I think often Sony's unique (not to say crazy) ideas slow them down. So as Sony
Ericsson they shouldn't be like no other especially not in negative way.
And another think about that sony doesn't want to be called a copy: It would be far better a high-end breathtaking, and
competitive phone, which could be called by some people copy, than unique and original, icompetitive weak phones.

Hey guys, I'm a long time reader here and am a big fan of SE. Just thought I'd make my first post to clear this misconception. Sony have been making ultraportables for quite some time under the Vaio brand name, even before the advent of the Intel Atom. i.e. they had netbooks before there were netbooks. The vaio P is an extension of that formula. It caters to an entirely different market segment compared to the cheap netbooks by Asus, Acer etc. And I can see why Sony is reluctant to call it by a name associated with cheap stuff.
The processing power is a moot point, really. Portability, style and that gorgeous screen are what they're banking on in the Vaio P. a difference of 300 MHz on a device primarily used for browsing/ chatting and watching movies isn't drastic . It's similar to the whole Vertu argument, in a way.

That being said, let's get to the point. I had asked this question elsewhere and maybe the experts here can throw some light into this:
Why isn't SE (or for that matter, any major manufacturer) use Windows CE as the template and develop Panels as the complete UI for it? I mean, look at the Meizu M8. It does exactly this and does it wonderfully! Think about it: One can get all the benefits of Windows Mobile without having to look at the drab menus! isn't that the best of both worlds?
I hope one of the insiders here can answer that.

Well what's the point of that graphics chip if it can't run java applications very well because of it's nonstandard navigation? I'd rather choose A200 phones even without those high performance chips, at least even though they weren't touchscreens, they can run almost all java applications in existence with unmatched speed (refer to M-R reviews of SE phones and see how SE had simultaneously blown the competition in benchmarks)

X1 successor another touchscreen phone .....???
I am sure this X, if SE really will announce it, wont be a successor to X1. It is another XPERIA. Just like the case of Nokia N71, which was not N70's successor at all.

Can we expect a W980 replacement in the near future?
I mean a high end flip phone. Up till now, most rumours are for slide or bar phones. Any top of range flip being announced shortly?
Thanks
