Sure enough that when it comes to charts we all want images to look as sharp as possible but in actual scenes, I rather have softer images that look natural than an oversharpened image that looks like clay when zoomed. I think Sony should also have manual controls for sharpening so as to satisfy those customers that like they're pictures to look more sharpened.
In the above pictures, honestly I don't think we need more sharpening there. I think that the sharpening is sufficient sometimes but in other conditions it is not. Sony's approach is definitely different than Samsung's. It seems to me that Samsung's software always want to look good on "chart" conditions while Sony and Nokia is more mature in that they value natural-looking pictures than impressing people based on chart performance.

^ that's the problem. based on the gsmarena and phonearena ISO chart i was complaining about, you can see how the z2 was overdoing (or wrongly doing?) the sharpening. those white artifacts are the result of sharpening. that's why it baffles me why in the other charts the z2 has soft images while in others there are obvious efforts (and failures) to sharpen the images.
gsmarena is essentially saying that the superior auto mode is the best way to get the best quality shots out of the z2 while almost everyone here is suggesting manual controls.
well, we can't drag this issue any longer. what is clear is that the z2 camera module is very much capable and we can safely say that, overall, the z2 camera is better than s5's despite the phonearena and gsmarena chart comparisons. that's my only concern.
the soyacincau link posted above also shows how software updates made the z1 just as good or even better than the s5. just look at the color accuracy and sharpness (no random blurring as gsmarena's samples show).

unfortunately, those features can't be shared here
how do you share the experience or output of ...
noise cancelling?
smooth user interface?
water resistance?
dust proofing?
tap to wake?
battery longevity?
premium looks?
etc etc
however, you can do us a favor and get that drop test done ...
we'd surely appreciate it. that's the only test lacking.

I dint get the NC earphone, will order soon though
UI is superb, clean & fast.i have loaded most of the stuff i need and its still fine.Need to monitor over the next month anyway.
Water Resistance/Dust Proofing I haven't tried yet, will get the first attempt done at the Service Center anyway
90% of the time i use Tap to Wake except for time when the phone has not been used for very long its VERY responsive.
Battery has been great it had 17% left after 16 hrs of use with my WIFI,3g and GPS switched on and a regular use of calls, internet and messaging through out the day.
Premium look and feel is great!one of the reasons i did consider the Z2 & M8
Drop Test? will do in the course of time
but i can tell you that my XS came out with flying colors in it

I love the phone so far.
Works like a machine and seems to be almost perfect.
What pisses me off though is that after resync of my Google account
the Calendar is seeing only ONE group of events (default).
It doesn't sync any other group. Arrrgh!!!!!
What a cr..p.
Anyway, I will post some photos in the coming days.
I made around 200 shots in Berlin and Brussels.
Camera is great!

I don't have seen the website nor the original images, but it looks like the Z2 image is in 8MP. So shot in Superior Auto Mode. And it does looks way sharper than the S5's image. So my guess is Sony is going for more sharpening in the Auto Mode.
And therefore, yes you're right in this image the Z2 doesn't need more sharpening, it's already sharpened more than enough.
And I would love to see more manual camera options in smartphones in general, like exposure, but also things like sharpening or noise reduction and so on. This could really be interesting.
-> I think I remember some old phones being able to change some of these values, but I guess nowadays smartphones are too smart
These pictures definitely look pretty sharp. They only shot in Superior Auto mode, right?
