slugworth don't know how you can call O2 a poor network, When its the biggest network in the UK when it comes to customers. They must be doing something right, by being the biggest in the UK.

@Mr Miyagi

Biggest doesn't always mean best and especially when it comes to Data tariffs even with yet again newly announced tariffs in most peoples opinions 02 is still way to expensive compared to others. 200mb is hardly unlimited by any one's definition and the iPhone although no real definition of unlimited is given yet we are led to believe it is about 1,400 pages a month which does equate to approximate 200MB not my idea of unlimited or even competitive.

@all,

Plus as i have mentioned elsewhere it appears it is Apple that are locking the iPhones not the Networks but until 9th November when i can read the T&C's in the Apple store i really have no further comments to make other than we will all have to wait and see if what Apple doing is legal or not.

Also can we please start to lose the hostility against each other as we are only trying to discuss the various options and it really isn't necessary aren't we all meant to be on the same side here.

Marc

although i'm new to this forum i've been reading about the iphone since day one, bit of an apple fan boy i have to admit and i'm always on the mac forums. this is why i like this site though. i have a biased few of the phone and no matter what i will buy it on nov 9th.
what's the view then of the non apple fan boys? is this just another phone or the future of the mobile?
all this talk about contracts and unlocking and 02 is doing apple no good what so ever. lets's remember this is the best device out there and will get better and better over time through updates.

very good point

i've never been much of a Mac man my self Linux and windows are my things but i own 2 ipods 1GB iPod Shuffle V1 and an iPod Video 30GB (5.5g) and well i love em as for the touch its to much for an mp3/mp4 player i think personaly its just a very small laptop. iPhone technicly its an amazing powerful peace of kit its looks and size to me are something of a hmmmm and errrrrm but thats just me

i know people have been buming the idea of an ipod phone or Macphone as they where called back in 2005/6 when roumers aroused peoples ow la la's to say. (sorry i was in alot of pain now the pain killers are kicking in) i think sony and nokia will put up a cheaper fight but a fight none the less (xbox360 V PS3 V WII) and linux vs mac vs windows so yeah best of luck to em i say ill stay clear for a year or so waiting for a cheep PnG option which is sim free/generic/unlocked or the iPhone v2 is released

yes i do think this bit of kick will become amazing in a few years and i can also see the linux boffins making a penguins apple im guessings its GPU is powerful and its CPU wont be to bad either + its 8GB of space i personlay think is a bit of a no no at that price they should of put a 160 GB HDD in with a 16GB flash cache but then prices would of shot up

Haven't read the whole thread so dunno if someone has suggested this, but if anyone has the curiosity and the cash, couldn't they just buy the phone and buy out the remaining contract immediately, and then force 02 to provide the unlock legally as the contract has been completed. From this, someone with a bit of knowledge about the whole unlock/locked differences could investigate further into what has been changed. Then we'll see if the software update bricks a legally unlocked phone. I dunno if apple and o2 would expect anyone to do this, and it could open a whole new can of worms for them...could be funny.

I haven't got the cash to waste by the way....

@LilyFluffer

Please read the whole thread and you will see i am of the opinion this won't be necessary, also on going on the information i have read from the states it is not the Network that are locking the iPhone but Apple.

As i said all this speculation is pointless and lets face it who is going to want to pay £269 for an iPhone and then pay 02 18 x £35 which comes to £630 just to see if they can unlock it, that IMO makes no sense at all unless some wants to waste close to £900.

@chrisfirst

Seriously you think the above cost is sensible please PM me i have some cheap magic beans for sale guaranteed to work.

the iphones locking system is clever it uses its GSM modem to block/brick phones unlike almost all normal mobiles that need the simcard to do so of the person ringing about a knicked phone so even if u remove the sim leave it off and update it, the sec you turn it on band dead. i can understand y apple refuse to unlock it as O2 where the highist bidder O2 will proved the most proffit back to apple
