Hi all,

I know this topic has been going for a while so apologies if I ask anything that has already been answered...

I recently got a P910i off Orange on upgrade, I dont like doing this as Orange mess about with the phone as we are all probably aware but I have heard that running the update from the SE web will unbrand it.

I have tried doing this using my Windows 2000 laptop at work on broadband and it gets as far as the Updating Phone part and fails with "Communication Error".

Havent tried with XP as I need to load it onto my spare machine.

Any thoughts? I saw a mention of some Jave runtime files but am havent read every posting to fathom what the deal is.

Any info would be grately appreciated.

@VXless

I think your experience shows that using the non-user FW update service, called EMMA I think, is more reliable.

I'm sorry if this is a duplicate question that has been asked before, but I have a P910i branded by Orange and I'm really keen to remove the branding. Orange have replaced the application picker screen you normally see when opening the flip with a crummy "homescreen" app that takes 20 seconds to open leaving the phone with a white screen and unusable for that time. I saw an unbranded P910i on O2 today. My colleague said "ouch, your p910 is crap" and together with the crummy orange icons and the other tied down config options, I have to agree.

I suppose the only solution is to flash a non-orange firmware. Is this something a Service centre can do? According to SE's update service, I have the latest for my CDA (162006/5) which is R1A30.
For those interested to see some of the orange-esque poor features:

hi everyone, need some clarification.

I have had my 910i for a month or so with vodafone UK. The firmware it came with was CDA162006/16 and the organiser CXC162041 R1A30.

The SE upgrade service 'said' that the correct organiser is R3E008.

After completing the upgrade the organiser still says CXC162041 R1A30

I noticed the phone section says: CXC162042 R3E008

did it upgrade correctly? and does anyone know what the changes are?

I've had the same. No change as far as I can tell. You did the upgrade correctly.

One option you can try if are having comms problems is to use the latest USB Serial driver from the SE Support site. I suggest as I am using a standard XP machine with USB 2 connections, similar to many people who are having problems with FW upgrades.

@Jah
As a lot people before me, I have problems with the update service. I try to follow all of your hints to solve the problem. Could you provide me a link to the USB driver at the SE Support side? I could not find it till now. It seems not to be in the support section.

Thanks in advance

@Andilil
Thank you for the link

For Documentation (maybe someone finds the key):
In the meantime I installed a native XP Home Edition SP2 and a native W2K SP4 under VMware just with Sony Ericsson stuff (Java 1.4.2_06, PC Suite 3.1.1, SEMC/USB drivers, SEUS 1.15).
XP failed with the same communication error (disabled firewall, disabled phone connection manager, remove/add battery at any possible stage during update, master reset at any possible stage during update, only one Java installed).
W2K had problems with the Java code and IE died before starting SEUS.
