rjoyce_CBR, you can most certainly read long filenames on fat16. Most usb flash memory drives are formatted in fat16. Most camera storage is formatted in fat16.

Fat16 is faster than fat32, but wastes a lot of space due to 32KB cluster sizes for 1-2GB partitions, and 64KB for 2-4GB partitions (4GB being the FAT16 limit for Windows 2K/XP and 2GB being the limit for pre win2k versions of windows).

I also used to format 2GB drives in fat16 when installing windows 2000 to get the best drive performance when I didn't need the security of NTFS.

Hi

I have just formatted my 1GB SanDisk (Yellow) card in Windows XP using Fat32 and I am now seeing 1.85GB space.

I am copying eveyerything back across now using a USB 2 car reader/writer and cannot notice any drop in speed.

I will let you know if there are any file corruption issues.

Cheers all

Just like to say I have a Sony black 512mb Duo Card, showed up in xp disk management as 2 partitions 1 active other not , deleted active made a new partition as 1 956mb using FAT32 , worked ok, have currently transferred 600 MB of mp3, video, film, etc seems ok.

If u reformat with Phone it goes back to 512mb, there not daft must be something in the card telling phone it is a 512mb

Just thought i would add my success.

I will post this for the last time....

If your fiddling around with something it is clearly meant to promote stability and longevity in a card dont be surprised to find data curruption or total data loss will arise...

Its like fiddling with your own brain...

For as much as getting somthing for nothing may sound very good I remember an old sayin....

Better one bird in the hand then two flying....

I can see a few birds flying!

@Leviath

fiddling with the own brain ?
this is not exactly what WE are doing, its just a replacable device man...

and about the birds,... well yea actually your right, but considre that it is working for some of us... and we can store more data than it is actually supposed to be stored on that card...

anyway,
I have a black Sony 512 card to, is that a special one ? I mean why is it black, does it have a meaning if the card is black or just a color ? because the other card was blue...

Would it be safe to assume that Sony has not thought about the possibility of re-formatting their MS? It seems that is thread based on futility. I could be wrong but if you want more capacity, why not simply buy it?
