Good question. The timing doesn't seem right, and it surely doesn't look like a mistake, unless it was a fake...

But darknoob's post separately confirmed the existence of this k850i successor.

I think SE is trying to market the 850i as a mass appeal phone, because it seems to be that the camera functionality of it is not a huge step up in terms of optics, but rather in terms of marketing (5MP is a big marketable number).

They will try to placate the loyal base (members such as me) with a more serious cam-phone...here's hoping for CCD.

forgive for reading just the last page of the thread, but seriously, K850i will have a CCD lens? W O W.... I'm pretty unsecure about the number buttons, seems to be very slippery and uncomfy....

SCREW CCD!

* I don't want the Power it requires to use over time (multiple pictures in a session or Video recording) = uses LOTS of battery power. Just compare the S700's/S710's battery power compared to the K700 in its day.

* I don't want the added heft/weight that CCD chips/lens housing require. They're more sensitive to impact/shake than other CMOS lens/housing/setup.

* CCD has proven itself but SONY themselves are finding it cheaper to use and almost negligible difference between the two. Many Cybershot slim camera's are USING CMOS & NOW even a HDD HD 1080p Camcorder by Sony uses CMOS!!!!!!

* I don't want the added $$$ just to have CCD jsut for its names sake.

SE announced 4 weeks after the initial launch of the K750i that a version using CCD would be produced ... fearing all die-hards of the S700 would NOT upgrade due to no CCD. However look at those FANTASTIC photos that the K750 CAN & HAS Taken SINCE CMOS was used EXCLUSIVELY ... I'm willing to BET $$$,$$$ that its BETTER even at 1.3MP than the S700/S710 photos.

I'm no CCD bandwagon jockey-whore just for the sake of the ride.

Personally I'd rather see SE fund research & bring to market Oil-based Liquid Optical CMOS Type sensor and lenses, that even with the slightest ULTRA-MEGA-LOW Power applied can change the shape of the Liquid-Lens to "optical" zoom in to a target. Also changing its refraction.

Prom, you make some excellent points, but let me offer you my rational:

I bought k790a because it was the first serious camera phone with a xenon flash. Why did I need xenon flash? Because I use my camera phone almost exclusively in dark situations (clubs, bars, restaurants).

The problem I have with the CMOS sensors are the excessive noise and granulation that they seem notorious for in dark shots. The problem is masked quite a bit in daylight, hence not very important.

Perhaps a jump to CCD isn't totally necessary, as long as the sensor size is larger, so the compression/interpolation ratio isn't as high

APS type CMOS sensors are far better than CCD. those type of lenses are used in many DSLR model ranges from Canon and even on Sony's Alpha A100 and DSC-R1 cameras.

try searching the steve's digicams site and have a glance at Sony R1 prosumer, A100/ Canon EOS 400D

Hmm... Wouldn't an APS-sized CMOS sensor in a camera phone bring up the price, weight, and size of the phone even more? I think these were reasons for not using CCD? And bringing in DSLR cameras into the comparison, how much would you pay for a CANON 400D, and how much would you be prepared to pay for a camera phone of equal photographic quality? And would you have expectations about the size and weight of the phone?

Perhaps this new cybershot phone will be UIQ? (must be with that huge screen, or is it just me and the screen isnt that big)

Perhaps it could have wif, GPS although I doubt the latter. I have an n93i right now a a contract to run down a few months before I can go for a k850 so i wouldnt get that till next year anyway. If this new phone is infact real and more specs surface then it could be interesting.

you wrong. i spooked with a guy at Sonyericsson in Linköping (Sweden), he said it was some kind of mineral glass, (they had also test the phone and everything)

I WANT CCD SENSOR ON EVERY (future) PHONES NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats why i gonna wait for "k950i"......(or what it called)
