Yeah a lot could be said about the conscription.
My brother's 13 years my senior (my younger sister and I are laatlammetjies) and he was in the thick of it up on the Angolan border during Operations Protea, Daisy etc.
He came back a hard drinking and sometimes bitter man, and very seldom, only after he had a good few toots, did he occasionally begin sharing with me about his experiences, including the mates he lost around him in the mortar raids etc.
