Hmm, thinking more and more about these add-on lenses and what they mean in the long run. The rumor says they're going to have the RX100 II sensor and lens as one option, and a smaller sensor and higher zoom lens as another option. That's great and all, but it's also only the beginning. I wonder if/when they'll eventually go bigger and we might start seeing APSC sensors or full frame sensors in such attachments. If those sort of things won't come for at least a year I think I'd wind up getting the RX100 II version for now.

Also, I wonder what this means for Sonys cameras as a whole from now on. I mean, is this just a side project to give mobile users more options, or is this somehow representative of the future of (at least some) Sony cameras? I imagine buying lenses with integrated sensors isn't the most cost effective solution vs. what's used today. I could see them releasing camera bodies meant to interface with these new types of lenses. You just keep your body and swap out your sensor/lens depending on your needs. When you don't want to carry around the body just slap the sensor/lens on your phone and you're good to go. Less ergonomic, but also less bulky.

I admit while I knew Sony wanted to integrate their various divisions more, I really didn't see this coming. Very excited about what this means. I just wish we knew what their long term plans were. I kinda hate to jump into the beginning of a new era right away because the second gen stuff is usually much better. At the same time I don't want to miss out.

True that, APS C/Fullframe sensors are too expensive components for an accessory, let alone the HQ lenses which usually costs more than $1000. I think they chose RX100II as the base HW for this very reason. they don't want the accessory to end up being pricier than the smartphone itself. but in the near future when the production of APS-Cs and fullframes go cheaper we may see them on the successors. but It can also be possible by now that Sony would slap an RX1+Zeiss F2 35mm lens on a new lens accessory just for showing off the competition as the RX1 was produced with that logic in mind.

Just daydreaming here...

Picture a Sony phone with all the quality and tech of Honami. Give it a slider design like Xperia Play with physical controls. For analog sticks use the nubs from PSP. The battery will be at least 50% larger with the added thickness. This device dual boots Android and Vita OS, and you can swap between the two of them at will. Phone and social media functions work just fine between the two OS's. This device will allow you to attach all the various lenses that we're hearing about.

Ahh... I love daydreaming

I'm curious when this obsession with cameras in cell phones is going to pass. To me, it's seems like it's all for bragging rights. Cause for the average joe, they've been good enough for years now. How good/clear do these pics have to be for people to stop complaining? Barring low light conditions, aren't cameras now good enough for 99% of the population? Arguing about sensor sizes, and which is bigger, etc. Utterly ridiculous.

Battery life however, has always been horrendous! Thankfully Sony recognizes that and will be addressing it with a 3000 mah battery. Not to mention being water and dust proof, yet the complaints continue to poor in about bezel size and so on. Amazing! The only thing I've truly learnt by reading this entire thread is that, amongst all the rumours... people will always find a reason to complain. There will never be a perfect phone for everyone.

let me use that logic with my argument, every year, smartphones are increasing SoC performance and display sizes, when only few android apps could really choke an dual core krait chip, when these chips are actually fast enough and the only real problem is the unoptimized app as a result of lazy programming on the developer' side, question, I'm curious when will this stupid trend stop?

On a serious note, all of this is just the part of the technological evolution, whether you like it or not, cameras will improve, and so are our needs. if you think people stop obsessing with these advancements then we should all be happy with an N82, as many people already considered that smartphone the first true compact camera replacement and all smartphones that utterly outperforms it in image quality these days are just for bragging rights

vapotrini is complaining that too many people in this thread are complaining about anything.
Anyone seeing the irony?

I see it the same way razec does, that's just technological change, evolution.
Moreover we should start complaining when SoC performance, RAM, camera quality and so on stagnate and the producers make us pay the same amount as last year for nothing better.

I hope Honamis camera is really the absolut best in the android market and can even compete with Nokias Pureview.
I don't see why better image quality is in any case a diasadvantage.

Well its obviously a concept.....
Also, I keep saying this over and over, but I hate gratuitous camera branding. Its vulgar and unsightly and ruins the elegance of the phone's design.
