Yeah it's mega easy and straight forward. Showed my not-so-tech-savvy mate how to do it once (he has a Vista lappy) and he's been fine with it ever since.
Just need to run it through a program called QuickPwn, get it from the official source over at blog.iphone-dev.org

Nah, thats Pwnage Tool that is Mac only. I think there is a Mac version of QuickPwn, but not too sure.
Give it a blast and come over to the dark side!
What's made you change your mind??

been wanting to do it for a while to try some of the stuff you lot are on about, and also my daughter still loves her 16gb 2g with all the community stuff. I tried the other week to update it from 1.4 to 2.2 for the app shop etc and she had zero interest

Cool. You'll love it... you've done well holding back til now to do it, all credit to the App Store there eh.
My guess is your daughter didnt like the transition between the old Installer and the new Cydia... Have you restored it back to 1.4 for her now?

I hadn't changed it at all, its still the original installer
she 17 and though she can see the stuff in the app shop on itunes, she's happy with what she has

Oh i see, thought you meant you actually updated it for her and then she wasnt interested. I guess as the saying goes, if it aint broke - dont fix it, shes happy with the way she has it now..customised etc.
My g/f is now almost as bad as me when it comes to iPhone related modding.... she's basically decided that my iPod touch is now hers and has customised the hell out of it! Another saying for that one - If you cant beat em - join em

Told ya it was easy!
Yeah, if you update firmware through iTunes you'll lose the jailbreak. Although I found last time I just used 'update' in iTunes and then QuickPwn'd, all my Cydia apps and settings remained. If you restore then you'll completely lose everything

to say jailbreak does not give anything extra, one must be the complete opposite of a power user lol...i think i would not be able to use the iphone for long if it was not jailbroken...
I don't believe in power users anymore - I'm constantly told a "power user" wouldn't touch the iPhone at all with or without jailbreak, so I guess we're all just plain old users Ares.
With my unbroken iPhone I blog, FTP, work on spreadsheets, carry files around, twitter, manage my work email and Exchange tasks, the list goes on and on - I'm probably more productive on the iPhone than I ever was on my Windows Mobile or UIQ phones. If I don't get to wear the power user badge because I can't SMS in landscape mode then so be it!
