The point is, can this be solved with a firmware update?

There is no such thing as a thin "bad" panel. All IPS panels are the same thickness more or less. What I feel is perhaps JDI wasn't ready to ship its 5 inch 1080p panel when Z went into production in December last year. I could be wrong though.

Actually there is, they can produce the same item with different quality, there's nothing weird about it. I would love to see someone confront Sony, that means getting Japanese version put against European version side by side, and do the comparison, if they are different, then flash with the same software (as someone mentioned they have different screen settings) if there is still a difference, make a big fuss about it so Sony will learn it's lesson. Till then, Sony gives a shit, as they can always say it's software or one's "vision" dependent.

The bulk of sales will be from customers who are far more concerned with the size of the screen than the quality.

But I don't understand how Japanese versions have better screens ? Japanese versions also wash out and have poor viewing angles.

I think we need to see some images of 2 Xperia Z side by side with exactly the same settings and see if there is genuinely an issue with the screens. We all have different expectations and see issues differently.

Anyone out there in such a position?

Would be hugely appreciated...

As mentioned I have handled 5 handsets and have not seen an issue on any.

Phones 4 U - Westfield, Chelmsford and Cheltenham
3 - Chelmsford and Westfield

Cheers

Well, while you're still waiting ( or actually only hoping ) for Sony to finally make a good and bugfree phone, with good screen, camera, music quality, processor, latest Android version with polished and good-looking custom UI, with proper product support and at reasonable prize, all in one, which I bet won't happen in this century, take a look at the real beast - HTC One! Samsung Galaxy 4 is around the corner too! Did I mentioned LG Optimus G? Or the newest Alcatel and Huawei additions, which have almost the same specs as your ultimately expensive Z, but in "better-looking box" and less than half the price.

Lots of massive billboard advertisements all over London for the Z. Sony are really pulling all the stops out on this.
