Ryan, aptbackup works marvelously to recover Cydia apps after a firmware uprgade and re-jailbreak
Boinng, what about MMS, copy+paste, today screen with rss, weather, calendar events, etc, on lockscreen, multitasking (IM apps on backgound), offline maps, etc...i surely would miss all this stuff

MMS I have with an Appstore app (I think it's UK only though). Calendar events, weather etc is only ever a click away - it's all so quick to get at that stuff, I don't really feel the need to collect it all together in one screen, but that's a personal thing I guess. The same goes for multitasking - I can switch apps in seconds and I don't want to swap any of that speed for stuff hanging on in memory, so it doesn't interest me - I must have spent more time closing down apps in the task managers of my old UIQ and WM phones than I actually spent using half of them, the Apple approach makes perfect sense to me. Out of your list I guess offline maps would be nice, but I'm guessing we're still not talking about TomTom so only of limited use over and above Gmaps. Copy and paste - yeah, I'd like that, but as I understand it the jailbroken version isn't universal or without its downsides, so I live without it for now. If Apple never implement it before they give up on this iteration and move onto the iPhone 3, then maybe I'll jailbreak just for that later.
The point is, right now I like being able to update with impunity, and find official ways of doing what I want to do in the Appstore, without any worries about slowdowns or software clashes or any of the other junk that starts to creep in when things get hacked and subverted by well meaning third parties. I've been there and done that with WinMo, mostly because without it WinMo sucked - the iPhone's different and I like it that way.

@ares AptBackup didnt work for me last time i tried, i think it may only work if you do a full restore. Could be wrong though. I do know that after i just 'updated' in iTunes that my 'Themes.xxxx' folder remained, and all of the settings for Cydia apps too (categories too) the only thing that was lost was the information sorted within Cydia.app like it didnt have showing up as installed in the 'Packages' section.
@Boinng At the end of the day jailbreaking comes down to personal preference. Personally i couldn't do without three main things - Intelliscreen, biteSMS (or any other SMS app) and Themes. I find the most enjoyment i get out of my iPhone is customising it exactly how i want it, and swapping over themes every few days when i get bored to keep it looking fresh. But again, i think i recall you saying before about how you love the simplistic design/layout of the stock apple theme which is fair enough. Each to their own.
I know I always end up rambling on about Intelliscreen, but i really couldn't do without it now. Being able to read my 5 favourite RSS feeds, read emails and texts, see the weeks weather forecast, Calendar updates, IntelliDial to call contacts in my favourites list and all that without needing to unlock my phone is pure convenience bliss

yeah its a personal preference thing,
personally i wouldnt give up all thats and ssbsettings for anything, i cant even imagine having to exit an app or to go thru 3-4 menu steps just to toggle bluetooth or wifi on and off
if that were the only option available i would still jailbreak for it

i was forgeting SBSSettings...frankly...if you want to have a decent battery life, SBSsettings is a must...to be able to QUICKLY turn off bluetooth, wifi, 3g, EDGE, GPS, is a must-have function...it would be a nightmare to do it the normal way, through the settings menu
RyaN, i did make a full backup through itunes, after running Aptbackup, imeddiately before i upgraded to 2.2.1...and it worked fine, i got all my cydia apps back in an instant

I see i see i see.... Personally i've held back on upgrading to 2.2.1 cos I didnt think it'd be worth the hassle. Have you noticed any particular difference in the new firmware?
Does AptBackup restore everything in your themes folder? Like stuff that hasnt been installed via Cydia, or would i have to back that up separately?
Also does AptBackup restore everything within the list of installed 'Packages' within Cydia, so it'll pick up updates etc? Cos last time i did it, even though my packages remained installed, i had to go through Cydia installing stuff again just so it 'knew' that i had it installed.

installed intelliscreen but it is constantly failing to get the registration code from their servers. I'm getting error 920 and their FAQ says to uninstall and reinstall which I've done twice but still no joy
waiting for an email from them now but if one of you have had this problem and solved it then please let me know how

I take it you are trying to retrieve it via wi-fi, as it cant retrieve over 3G. Is it bought and paid for, or are you just trying to retrieve a demo license?
edit: Also trying rebooting between uninstalling and reinstalling, see if that works
