Having 2 or more flagship models will put off customers. The reason why Apple and Samsung is on top right now is because they have an established FLAGSHIP model, the Galaxy S series and iPhone. They only update them once a year and they retain more of their monetary value more than those being replaced every 6 months. Customers wants the best from what they can buy for a long time and they want value for their investment. Samsung may have many products on their portfolio but only one is the flagship. Apple introduced iPhone 5c but still the Flagship is the 5s.
I like what Sony is doing now, they are moving more upmarket, they announced that they are ditching the low end segment for good. They are also releasing lesser models and they have been updating the firmware of their handsets on par with the competition. If they continue this as well as investing more on marketing and product placement they will surely overtake Samsung on the Android race.

So how come S4 is going to be soon upgraded with snapdragon s800 CPU? There is also rumour that the octa version will also be upgraded with their improved octa exynos.
It's nothing more than upgraded version of 'flagship' device and I think I prefer Sony's style with better upgrades than only CPU, after all last year and a year before that it was exactly what they did with Arc/Arc S and S/SL and now Samsung is going to do the same thing

i like them releasing new flagships that way because of the price reduction although i think it's preferable having just one flagship in a year. they can just do a refresh in the second half if a new processor becomes available to be competitive.
also, i hope sony can find a way to integrate google image search with their camera app. that way we can find information about almost anything by just using the camera. their info eye is useful but it could be more useful if we could immediately do a search by simply taking a picture.

I disagree with you !
Indeed Xperia Z1 fared better !
But the victory was not easy, in fact I think Z1 obtained only a slight advantage !
Unexplainable, since the Z1 has a much larger image sensor !

And HHT mode was not turned on i think so,which could make a vast difference.

The author concluded z1 a winner in mostly majority of set

the nokia 925 is not bad at low light , we can even see it here:
http://www.sonymobile.com/glo[....]ults/xperia-z1/#camera-overall
bear in mind that the software of the z1 is not finalized, and the bionz should be improved... and then you will start seeing the z1 in full action.
TBH the lumia 925 seems better in night shots at automode than his younger better specd brother.. the lumia 1020.

Questionable.
I would say Apple is succesfull because they introduced a great and disruptive phone, and that delivers a really polished and enjoyable user experience. They have the advantage of the first mover.
Samsung, as in other area, is succesfull because they deliver a product "almost as good" for cheaper. They do update their flagship more than once a year, eg they will soon launch the GS4 alpha in Japan, so the one per year statement is innacurate. Also, they are not successful thanks to the GS only, but because they are efficient in declining the platform in many models, form factor and price segment. They have the advantage of efficient, low(er) cost industrial process.
You could add the marketing in the mix, but this is just part of the story, not the most important. You can fail with a lot of marketing. No need to dig very deep to find examples, look at the surface!
EDIT: by "almost as good", i meant almost as good, so less good, but also almost the same, or borrowing the ideas to make something that seems identical.

@shotokan
the Z1 in Japan, will it be the same as the rest of the world
or it is just docomo who will be releasing their own customized model?
Will it have extra features such as IR and TV seg tuner?
from the QX10/100 casing for the Z1, there's an additional hole
