@bjerky: fantastic - right near all the strip joints and seedy night clubs!
if you're looking for night life i would personally avoid king st, unless you're into teeny-bopper joints and ladies who can't afford enough clothes. there are some decent clubs in Crown across the river, but they generally take security seriously over there (a good thing IMO).

maybe it'll pick up over the weekend. there are a few other hostels in Spencer St and up near the Queen Victoria Market (top end of Elizabeth St, the river being at the "bottom" end).

get out quick! it's obviously not a real hostel but a front for some pseudo-religiuos cult of tea-totalling weirdos seeking to ensure you actually remember what you did the night before.

if you're looking for some good spots around town other than Crown (btw - you'll need collar and shoes to get into most of the clubs there), then you could try Lygon St in Carlton which is about two blocks from Melb Uni, or you can look at Chapel St or Brunswick St but transport is a little harder from the city. Lygon is mostly cafes and bars, as is Brunswick St, but Chapel has a good mix of bars and clubs. there are Irish pubs nearly everywhere (try Pug Mahones in Hardaware St in the CBD, and there's another just off Lygon).
come to think of it, collar and shoes goes for most Melbourne nightlife. hope you have a good time in town.
