@ Rhino,
Yislaaik, that's quite a collection of phones there, boet! Wow.

@ JC,
Oops, sorry for not replying to your question earlier, I slipped up there.
A lot of consumer goods are cheaper if only using the exchange rate as a basis. Another example would be used cars, which are bloody cheap here.

Here's a link to eBay's car section so that you can get some idea:
http://listings.ebay.co.uk/Ca[....]brsrtZdQQsocmdZListingItemList

Another thing that greatly amplifies expenditure is where we live, just outside the periphery of Greater London. The house we have, as a result of this location, is roughly double the price of what you would pay for the same house in a smaller town further away. However, we therefore have 'London weighting', which is an additional £3500 (approx R49000) onto our annual salaries to assist with the higher living costs.

What one really needs to do is look at what you get out with your salary in both countries, after bills, tax, pension, living expenses, etc etc.

Of course, quality of life is a separate but ultra-important factor too.

Despite all the costs that have been stated and using this as a guideline, we both still clear far, far more (net income salaries) than the gross income salaries that we had in SA, several times over. As I've mentioned before, money ain't everything, but it helps.

It's not always easy though; the trade-off being that I miss a lot of friends and family, riding on the bikes in the Eastern Cape etc etc. Really does tug on the heart strings at times, particularly at this time of the year.

@ Hobbster,

Ths suns' actually out, piercing through the usual Winter-grey sky, and it's pretty mild weather (for a Winter's day) compared to yesterday anyway. We had to scrape ice off the car several times this past week before we could think about driving off anywhere...
In 2 and a half hours time (4pm), it'll be dark again though...

The iconic W810i is still been sold by Carphone Warehouse here, now only £59.95 (approx R840). So much phone for the money.

@ JC,
Ya, you could almost get 3 of them here for that equivalent money.

@ Jojo,
Wow matey, unusual to see you posting at that time (your latest post here). I presume you're now...?

Finally got my latest iPod and have to give props to Apple for another brilliant gadget. Love the addition of CoverFlow on the latest line of Nano's and the refreshed menus that displays album art throughout...truly awesome.
