who is using edge anymore ?...oh sorry - the iphone

Dude - EDGE is a VERY GOOD solution and is STILL valid today. BlackBerry's deliver incredible fast push email (non HTML for now but HTML support is coming with BES 4.3 by end of this year; compressed of course). GOVERNMENT employees use this solution so that prooves that EDGE has its place.

Vodafone in both Europe, France, Belgium have deployed EDGE not jsut for the blackberry corporate devices but also because it operates in a FURTHER range than UMTS/HSDPA at a MUCH cheaper costs (no increased licensing bids/purchases for bandwidth) and this was mostly a software upgrade with a few hotswap card hardware upgrades on some switches & tower base stations. T-Mobile in Europe also have deployed EDGE data speeds. Its main reasoning ..... QUALITY OF SERVICE alternative for UMTS users becoming out of range or network issues when UMTS is not available .... I'd rather be streaming a 240x320 15-25fps video with AAC stereo audio @64kbps totaling a full bit package of guessing say, 200-250kbps on UMTS and drop to EDGE than GPRS and have that video feed be killed outright. Think about this .... 386kbps maximum for UMTS ... realworld around 360kbps down to say 240kbps (real world for EDGE, avg is 180kbps; theoretical makes is 284kbps est). Now in todays network consumption and hardware support of H.263 this would be HORRIBLE; but with H.264 the streams bandwidth would automatically be scalled down in data size while still remaining smooth over such a data rate drop on the network.

quite frankly, although EDGE's latency is higher than UMTS > its STILL being developed with Ericsson promising up to 2Mbps rate. IF THIS CAN be achieved WITHOUT bandwidth changes or licensing upgrades required by licensed radio spectrum governing bodies across the world and handsets & PC Express cards can be cheaply manufactured ... I'm looking forward to is.

There are also quite a few Edge networks in Europe. The more options the better.

I contacted t-mobile regarding HSDPA and received this reply (the spelling could be better ):

"Hello,

Thanks for your email enquiring about HSDPA speeds on web'n'walk and its cost.

I can understand how important it is for you to know about the service which you're planing to take. I appricate you wrote to me seeking clarification.

T-Mobile currently support HSDPA speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps (Megabytes per second). HSDPA has been provisioned automatically for all new web'n'walk customers and all new Flext customers.

Its my pleasure to inform that this service will be added to your account at no extra cost."

Great stuff! Wasn't HSDPA only available in the UK on a special tariff previously?

its funny that the support guy actually made an effort to explain "mbps" but still got it wrong.

edit: also, look at the beachpicture you used as an example (k850), if you resize it to a viewable resolution (let's say 1280x1024) you hardly notice any noise and the picture looks great

1280x1024 is 1.3MP. The point with a 5MP camera phone becomes lost if you have to scale down the photos to enjoy them.

I prefer a camera phone that produces photos that still look good even when printed on A3 high quality photo paper. (A3=420x297mm.)

No, the reason you have 5mp is so when you resize the picture you will have greater image quality. Do you think people with 10MP dSLRs view their picture at 10MP? No, they'll view them at maybe 800x600. Look at some picture sites. ( e.g. http://www.picturepunk.com/safari.html )

If it makes you FEEL any better, I've got a much longer wait here in Canada . However, if it ships by end of September, if I recall initial press release stated that K850i would ship end of 4th qtr. By end of September then their AHEAD of schedule - as long as its NOT rushed and the touch-sensitivity of the GUI keys are accurate 95% of the time then its OK by me.

Anyone know if the keys are Heat Sensitive, Electric sensitive, or Conduction sensitive in some other manner??

Of note ... Ericsson hasn't been standing still with their networks division either.

They've got the contract in INDIA for 3G upgrade.
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced it had won a turnkey contract valued at USD 1.3 billion to supply GSM and WCDMA/HSPA equipment and related telecom services to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), the largest telecom operator in India.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will be responsible for the expansion and upgrade of BSNL's existing GSM network and introduction of WCDMA/HSPA functionality. This upgrade marks an important step in BSNL's network evolution and sets the stage for end-customer access to a range of innovative telecommunications.

Ericsson will supply a GSM and WCDMA/HSPA radio access network, transmission equipment and a complete GSM/WCDMA common core network - including the Ericsson Mobile Softswitch Solution, service-aware Packet Core, IMS and a multiservice IP Packet Backbone Network. Ericsson will also deliver telecom-related services, such as network design, deployment and systems integration.

Deliveries will start in October 2007, with the first phase of the project set to be completed in 12 months. The contract reinforces Ericsson's leading position in this high-growth market and reflects Ericsson's ambition of offering communications to all

Also Green base station?
http://justamp.blogspot.com/2[....]ils-innovative-green-base.html
And the concrete itself has a lower environmental impact than traditional steel, producing 30 percent less CO2 emissions during production and transportation.

How does lower concrete contribute to lower CO2 emissions? A freakin CONCRETE POLE?! cOMMON!

Either way wondering if BSNL's network will get these towers.

Or are they also getting the K850i??

I love the design of SE phones. Being a designer myself this is a very important pre-requisite to me. I have to say, the design of K850 is ugly and the D-pad functionality looks questionable. It looks like SE has gone out of their way and character to emulate Nokia in their sad 7610's adventurous days. As of why, probably the designer is a big *ss kisser to get his design chosen, maybe they're trying to break away from the conventional or maybe they've just hired retards as designers and decision-makers. Harsh as this may sound, I think it's quite justifiable looking at the outcome. And as if the design is not enough to disappoint me, initial reviews have shown that the dedicated Cybershot branded K850 cameraphone can't quite compete with the "jack of all trades, master of none" all-in-one device N95.

You would think the convergience of the biggest names in innovative devices manufacturing, Sony and Ericsson would come up with something worthwhile for its flagship products, but its backside just got kicked by Nokia - again. Very disappointing.

@mode

Id rather have this dpad than a joystick. Now I wonder if the softkeys are designed to last only a year instead.

Mode you should know that no 1 designer completely designs a product in the cellular or even in the car industry any longer.

Nokia fired theirs just over 7mths ago.

Now there is a HEAD of design that gets ALL the credit; however who knows what the core design looked like.
