sony warn about sea water for its IP5X phones, so onsen may actually be bad for the phone

onsen water is underground/mountain water so it's fresh water. not salt water.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the reason why Japanese phones usually are IPxx certified is because Japan, just like the rest of the countries on the pacific ring of fire, is very prone to natural disasters like typhoons/quakes/tsunami. I heard before during the 3-11-11 onslaught that waterproof devices played a big role on helping rescuers on pinpointing the location of the survivors during the disaster.

Waterproof is great for our humid summer, and in particular heavy rains and typhoons.
I do not think it is a feature built with tsunami or earthquake in mind.
