@Luke-the-magic-man
You responded without reading it seems.
Nothing of what was in my list is groundbreaking and can be found in most phones, therefore the hardware is pretty basic and not revolutionary.

The lack of led? ------------it has a big lcd screen, where do you need a lcd?
LED not LCD
The 5h talk time? ----- isnt that similar to most nokias?
No Nokia dies after 5 hours.

The 15h "music only" time? ----- similar to a w800i I believe... + most people charge their phones every night
More like 30 hours.

The phone capabilities? --- it can ring and text... that is a phone
You ever tried a windows mobile phone? The way the calling is implemented matters.

There is NOTHiNG in the hardware specs that makes this phone revolutionary or five years ahead of it's competitors.

If you read my thru post, not skim thru it, u'll se I diss the hw and praise the sw.

OK .... I confess.

I'm a "NAY-SAYER". I thought all the rumors were false and thought TOO MUCH HYPE was impossible to believe. For Shame I should've known better. This isn't Microsoft we're talking, dreaming, hoping, drooling about. This isnt a lack luster company like DELL that cheap corporations purchase from. This is rumors about a product CONCEIVED BY, LOVED BY, DEVELOPED BY, and TESTED BY those unique thinkers that love their lives, their loved ones, working with their colleagues. This is by ppl that enjoy working with their computers and have full control over them NOT the other way around like I do TS for with Windows.

This is APPLE!
This is from a company that was built on the promise to make using computing & our digital life powerful yet simple! Allowing us to enjoy our lives not be a slave to life.

I repent my foolish remarks regarding the iPHONE!
I wont doubt Apple's abilities ever again no matter HOW tough times get.

He said it's thinner then any other smart phone, wrong:
Samsung i320: Dimensions: 111 x 59 x 11.5 mm (Iphone 11.6mm thick)
From Expansys:
http://www.expansys.com/p.asp[....]echnical&action=open#technical

It's copied Nokia and Ipaq's with the Ambient Light Sensor
My digital camera has a sensor for landscape mode which automatically changes the screen.

VERY impressed with the Email and SMS functions, will we get free Yahoo push email in the UK??
The widgets are cool but will cost you to use unless on WiFi. The google maps search is cool but AGAIN unless on WiFi will cost you. It's no GPS SatNav though and is something that 3G would of really helped with.
The real life demo though shows great integration of the features.

To me apart from the messaging it's all just show, nothing revolutionary at all as it's all been done. I also thought Mr Jobs was way too big headed by claiming that ALL other mobile phones are not easy to use including non smart phones!! Well if my mum can use it then it's certainly easy.

FAR too much hype with this phone in the keynote and I couldn't help thinking it's been designed for the American market first as in the UK a LOT of the features would cost loads to use I.E. data stuff unless using WiFi which isn't really widespread enough yet or free enough in the UK. I liked the way that you need ITunes to sync the device as well, Symbian works direct with Outlook!

These are MY views after watching the keynote. I would DEFINETLY recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to do so. I myself am not sold as it's lot's of existing tech combined. To say it's revolutionary and reinventing the phone IMO is one of the most over exagerated claims of the centuary. The P990I has a claimed 9 hours talk time on GSM as well, the IPhone has a claimed Talktime OR video OR browsing of 5 hour. And when using the comparison, where's the W950I/ M600I/ P990I
A bomb dropped - Visual Voice Mail will NEED network provider support!!
So is it only going to be on one UK network as it will be in the US??

$499 with a 2 year contract!! That's £257.84 far too much.

The IPhone is cool but I can't see Apple ever dominating the mobile market as they are far too late and their is far too much competition, they will also need a catalogue of phones like Nokia and SE to get a reasonable share. It will certainly make the other manufacturers take notice I think.

Like I said just my opinion though.

Your right I did do that without reading, i couldnt find the correct post where the quotes came from.

Firstly I know it said led not LCD, but what do you mean? It does not need LED (I asume were talking about LED Lights?)

I know many nokias that dies after about 5 hours, the nokia n73 only has a battery of 226 min acording to the official specs. and whats that? 4.2 hours or something?

I don't think the w800i will play music for 30 hours, and thats asuming you don't just leave it playing with headphones on quiet and not touch it for 30 hours eriter

I must say i have used numerous windows mobile based phones and have to say they are possibly the most awkward and useless devices on earth, the menus are slow and awkward, they functions are limited, and the hardware and software seems to have little thought put into it.... (I don't like windows but can use it fine, but windows mobile is a poor excuse for a operating syystem). I am sure apple will have made it work as well as a good old 3310 (one of the best phones ever made if you ask me)

your right there is nothing special about the phone other then the fact it uses numerous new touch and sensory technologies in its harware and has up to 4gb of internal memory along with built in itunes software (itunes is the workd leader in music download/management software), and the software/ui has been designed in a way which no other company will have thought of or even considered...

Needless to say the iPhone is going to dramatically change the phone industy, as it has the technology and thought put into which can compete with any new sony ericsson and mp3 player, pmp or tablet pc on the market...

Let me right down the merits and demerits of this phone
MERITS: 1) excellent user interface 2) slim design 3) good storage memory 4) excellent os with many features widgets and applications 5) large display 6)multi functional touch screen 7) excellent build quality thats it these are the only specs that seems to outshine every one else . . Now DEMERITS 1) bad resolution for a 3.1' display should have been higher 2) no keypad 3)no 3g and hsdpa 4) only 2mp camera with no autofocus. . Should have been 5mp with autofocus 5) no gps reciever which could have made google maps more useful 6) no video recording @ 30fps I would only spend 600$ if it had all these. . . . IMO only the user interface is next gen nothing else is. . . . I'll wait for the next iphone or may be an iphone killer from nokia or se or samsung

I agree with much of what s4k1s is saying. This device is amazing. Although what people are forgetting is that this device won't do much to halt the assault on the music player market that the phone manufacturers have atm. It'll still be a niche product, the price alone will see to that. 5 years ahead? More like 5 months.

Ok.

This gadget is competing against MP3 and basic video players. A product replacement for IPOD.

Look at the other announcements today and you can see that Apple is behind in product specifications on similar gadgets. What Apple do advance on in the User Interface BUT it has a unfriendly single-hand text input method.

(Imagine you put it in your palm and then need to type a message with your thumb, being such a wide body design and the keyboard at the bottom it's not going to be a easy thing typing with one hand)

It's not competing against Phone producers.

no UMTS, no USB, no autofocus, no flash/light, no memory slot ? Quite heavy, bad resolution screen. This is 2005 technology not 2008 like their planned global launch date.

But Apple fans and hollywood celebs who gets it in a gift basket will of course use it
