You might actually be right, that'll teach me for taking Marc at his word - but nevertheless it will, that's an absolutely gilt-edged prediction. As soon as the appstore is in full flow, you can guarantee that Quickoffice, or Docs2Go, or somebody else will get in there and provide that. If Apple don't themselves.

Yes, unsubsidised phones cost money, this is not uncommon. For what it is, the Iphone is still competitively priced, and for the vast majority of people who buy phones under contract, it's now very affordable.



It's not even close to competing with the Iphone on any level whatsoever though, is it? Is this the future for UIQ now, to be knocked out on cheap feature phones to people who couldn't care less about smartphone features? Admittedly it's kept S60 alive for far too long, but I would have thought you had higher hopes for UIQ into the future.

SE could scrap every phone in their current range and replace them with equivalents running UIQ, it might even be a good idea, but it doesn't move the platform on at all. And they're not doing that anyway, just putting a little outdated prototype out there, eventually, in their painfully slow way. Meanwhile, the world yawns and moves on...

Id love to have a go aswell but ultimately i think ps1 and psp game library on future SE phones will make most cream their pants!!

The good thing aboput the iphone is making everything simplistic, yep i do think wm6.1 is very powerful and is better if you can get along with it being a little more complex.

But we have to find out if this is only a flavour injection or the evolution of an apple, as if it is just a cheap injection I hardly believe that it'll attract any of the smartphone gourmets (be it junkie or businessman), since it will have the same old shape, peel and flesh of an apple and will therefore never be a real 'orange experience'.

But if this is the beginning of an evolution (which btw I seriously doubt), then yes, it may well have chances to get the audience's attention and even gain a considerable market share in the long run.

Time will tell.

Which is not actually a bad idea, but then again the OS used in the feature phones is gradually edging closer and closer to smartphone status anyway. SE don't really need to move UIQ along, it needs new hardware to enable newer features. Like a truly high spec cybershot, 10mpix+, optical zoom, xenon flash, face recog, touch focus, PROPER cybershot menu interface, running uiq with full image editing abilities, wifi sharing of the camera folder, fully configurable slideshow integrated with the media player etc etc etc. Why haven't they done that already? because the current hardware is just too slow, the file sizes for images like that would be too high for the phone to deal with sensibly.

Will iPhone kill off uiq? no, of course not. Complacency from SE will do that without any outside assistance.

It's going to be Apple who does it or no one, I think. The same as with the wifi standards problem. Apple will have to license a company specifically to do something like that because of the limits on the sdk (and it's license) - the apple store just won't end up hosting that sort of application.

I've always chuckled at phones claiming to be "business", but the iPhone is downright hilarious. Let's see what kind of business functions it has, straight from the source (http://www.apple.com/iphone/enterprise/) that claims it's the best phone for business EVER!

1. You can check your e-mail, including attachments.
2. You have access to a calandar app.
3. It has contacts management!!! And I quote "Finding contacts on iPhone is as simple as scrolling through your contact list or using the search feature." Brilliant...
4. It has a web browser.
5. Enterprise applications. And by having enterprise apps Apple means "Using the iPhone SDK, an enterprise can easily create applications customized to its business needs and even take advantage of key iPhone technologies such as Multi-Touch, the accelerometer, fast wireless connectivity, and GPS.".
6. Smarter phone features, such as "Swapping and merging calls and even initiating conference calls.". Sold!
7. More for business, including "Find a customer’s address and get directions with GPS-powered Maps. Send SMS messages to multiple recipients.". Multiple recipients people!

Yawn...

Nobody but Apple is claiming the Iphone is the best business phone, but you would expect Apple to, wouldn't you?

But the point here is that they are pushing it for business, they have added some business friendly features (not every phone has full Exchange and Cisco VPN support you know), and it can be used in business. For real. In anger.

So it's not the best business phone, no, but it can be a business phone, and it will get better. I don't know why everyone here is so keen to underplay that. Actually that's a lie, I know exactly why, of course I do...

"Other phones can do that" - what the hell kind of pathetic answer is that to anything? How many phones can really do all of that, and everything else the Iphone does? Nothing from SE right now, that's for sure.
