Doesn't matter. Their article doesn't mention in house materials cost less. They are probably taking prices from the market. Even if that's true then why does Xperia have 75% of cam sensors from Samsung? You have to admit except screen, all of X1 materials must be cheaper (edit: or equal). And that's the price when it was first released. X1 came 3 months later, things get cheaper in time. I might even argue that X1 bom is under 400.
Sony is known to have higher profit margins, there's no way it costs more to make 1 and it's 50 dollars cheaper (retail price)
DRAM in Samsung is double the size of the one in 1. I don't think the sensor costs more than what is in the S10. The lens could be more expensive though.
Financial reports will be released on the 30th this month.

I mean that a stacked cmos costs more than non-stacked cmos counterpart. Much more.
X1 main cam costs more than X5 main camera.
Apple uses isocell too.
Except isocell and ufs2.1, I cant think of anything cheaper about X1.
It has GG6, usb 3.1, screen seems very expensive, ingress protection hardware and certification, military certification like LG phones, zeiss lenses (The milvus logo is not on UWA module, might be G instead).
Adapt things from Alpha and Bravia do not seem easy and cheap.
The guy responsible for Creator Mode said doing it on a phone was a huge challenge.
This story is very weird, because even with lower sales they should not be losing all that money.
Google and OP sell less than Sony, but are not losing with phones.
Sony also lost a lot with Z, M , C and E too.

Told this before. It's a high density panel but it doesn't have curves or punch holes or tucked in drivers. It's a very straightforward panel. It has a plain old fps, no wireless (reverse) charging. Nothing special for the glass finish. Less ram, less d ram, one less camera, less battery, no jack. Integrated qualcomm audio chip (S10 exynos has cirrus logic). Design-wise it's also a very simple assembly it's almost the same as old Z phones.
S10 also has those things except back glass and military standard. But that mil std rating is nowhere to be found on any official product pages. Only one clove.co.uk page which could be a mistake. And software or rnd costs aren't in the bom. Or cine alta app by itself would have been a serious cost.
Apple uses isocell but has a lot more in that ugly notch than a single 1/4" fixed focus camera. This sensor is used for depth sensing on s10+. I'm not sure but Samsung's Oled must be true 10 bit also. So take 1 give 1 I don't think X1 would have higher bom. (if you want to continue this pm me so we won't use this thread)
They lost money on 10 10+ we still have to wait for the end of the month to know how X1 performed. Also the restructure was still underway this year, it led to losses.

In house or not doesn't matter. It's all about the quantity.
Sony can't have the same prices Samsung pays.

Sony Semicon charges more from Apple than OnePlus for exmor.
OnePlus is getting a better one.
When you know your client will sell tons, you take advantage and rip them off.
If Apple had QHD screen, they would be paying for sure more than Samsung.
If more units made pieces ordered cheaper, then those that sell less phones would be paying more for same pieces and their phones would be much more expensive to make.

Sony sensors in Apple are custom made while the op7's 48mp is the generic one everybody gets and sony already sold millions of that sensor. Price drops after a while.
If best selling brands are ripped off then X1 should be even cheaper to make since sm can't sell.
