You can never have too many, I suppose.
The battery bug has corrected itself. I recently had to replace the battery on my old Xperia 1 iv (which I have now sold), so hopefully, I won't have to do that again.

I need to have it in my hand first.
And what is it under the camera button? Looks like it could be for a wrist strap.
Will get mine on friday.

Oh nice. It looks like it has some extra protection around the camera bump. Wonder how much thicker it makes the phone to put it into your pocket.
Seems they attempted to recreate the ore texture on the back too.

I have been poking around a bunch to help myself decide on getting a VIII or settling for a domestically sold phone (ewww).
The great people on XDA have laid out a nice guide to enable 5G by temporarily unlocking the bootloader and using root to update the policy files.
It seems people have been successful doing it on the global version from HK, but I have not seen anybody doing it on a Japanese sim free model.
I will wait a bit and see. or I may just take the plunge and see what happens. But, it is nice to see there may be a solution.
I need to switch to tmobile anyway so as a backup plan, I may get the TCL NXTPAPER 70 PRO. It is free with bill credits over 2 years. That way I will at least have a working phone.
Anybody with a japanese sim free version want to check if the bootloader is unlockable?

The HK version has always been the global version with a wider range of bands, so if you go that route I would pick that one instead of the Japanese anyway.
That's what I always do, I have a 1 vii on ATT at the moment and the dsds toggle trick always brought 5G up without any problem until the past update...but didn't unlock yet as I just got the phone back a few months ago due to replacement from the motherboard original debacle so not willing to wipe the phone right now, I might if future updates don't fix the issue though

Yes, the HK version has more bands, but I'm only concerned about Tmobile brands here in the US, which are 41 and 71. None of the variants support 71 unfortunately. 41 is supported by all variants.
Interestingly enough, the Japanese version supports N66 but HK version does not. Tmobile is in the process of migrating their LTE network to 5G and that likely means the current LTE 4/66 bands will become 5G N66. LTE band 5 will likely become 5G N5 too.
So, in the future, Japanese model will support 5G N5, N41, and N66. HK version will support N5 and N41.
My primary reason is getting the 16GB/512GB model since it's not offered anywhere outside of japan.
The unlocking should work as long as the bootloader is unlockable. Just don't know if that is true on the japanese model yet.
@Maratonmannen - would you mind checking if the japanese version you have has unlockable bootloader? following these steps:
1. In your device, open the dialer and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
2. Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can unlock. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.

That's great news! Thanks for checking for me. I can feel better about things now and place my order soon. I need to switch providers too.
